Im still on D3's if I was upgrading I'd go D3s, D4 just wasnt a big enough jump imo.
For video stuff I bought a Sony, DSLR video as much as they are great they have so many flaws!

Why do they need replacing soon? Do you need to print bigger than 20x30"? Do you need more than 8fps? Do you want to shoot video?
I'm not being antagonistic - genuinely interested. I have a D700. Every time a new Nikon body comes out I'm on tenterhooks, then almost instantly content that I don't need anything more in a stills camera.
Because they are getting old. Plus one of the has a broken hotshoe. Oh I'm not worried about mp, I know 90% of people don't need more than 10mp. D3s is a consideration, but I like how small and discreet the 700 is. I'd get an 800 in a heartbeat if they released an update so you could scale down the size of the RAW file. 36mp equals 70meg raw file. Fuck that.

You're right about video. Sod doing it on an SLR.

d700?
Yup, 700s, plural. No, not a secret model Nikon have released.

What makes your money / what do you shoot typically?
Discreet? Leica? :P

Five years old if you got them when they were first released - not old in my book, and certainly not for a top-end body which was the thick end of two grand new! Full service at Fixation, new hotshoe, new rubbers if needed - good as! Mine has put out over 100,000 frames and no issues yet. Had a new hotshoe about three years ago, rubbers need glueing again.
I honestly think there are very few real-world gains from getting a new body for your type of work. Small improvements in metering, white balance, focus - maybe, but again it depends on how you use the camera. As you say, files that big are just not necessary for most applications.
Be interested to see which way you jump!

Went to Belgium's atlantic coast for a few days with my G9, the light was amazing and so rapidly changeable. In the space on one walk we had blinding sunshine, hail, ferocious winds, dark skys & rain (maybe not in that order)

The Berlin memorial thing is fucking eerie.
-
• #4819
Cheers, the Holocaust memorial is a pretty weird place, quite disorientating and very imposing.

Well it's not like it's a maze, is it?
You just keep going in one direction, and you're out.The 'imposing' part is interesting.
What's bewildering me everytime I go inside is how quieting the thing is.
Like, when you're in the middle of it you hardly hear the city any more. -

Anyone have any eperience of using a Canon FD to EF mount adapter type thing? Specifically the slightly more expensive one (£30ish) that has a correcting lens and electronic mounting stuff to get metering working?
Thinking of getting a 5Dmk1 and wondering if its worth trying to get my old FD primes working with it.
-
• #4822
For £30, I'd say it's worth a go. Though EF primes aren't that expensive unless you go L
-
• #4823
I think you will be dissapointed with the results - the extra element in the adapter really decreases the quality of the FD lenses.

Yea, I also heard it's "shit".

A worthy replacement for my trusty LX3? It's been great, but it's been dropped so many times now that the autofocus is getting sketchy and the screen occasionally decides to jazz things up a bit. I'm mostly taking pictures of stuff I've made (product design student), so good macro's pretty essential. The bright/wide lens was handy. Also skint, obvs.
