  • So, after wanting to have a bit more control over my photos (...) everything's still a bit luck rather than judgement.
What might I do well to consider in the future?

Get Lightroom and start shooting raw if you're not doing it already, and start playing around with editing.

Things like shooting and "developing" raw pictures, and all the editing after the shoot opens whole worlds.
There are powerful tools to work with, and it can also be fun.

To be honest - if you're just starting out, I would leave this alone for a while,
learn the 'basics' first, and "keep it simple".
Definately get a solid grip on how your camera works (and how cameras work in general).

  • The man speaketh the truth. Even back in the day learning on film, you had to make sure you understood how to get the best from your camera first before working on darkroom techniques. With film AND digital, it's always best to do get it done in camera first, than relying on editing.

  • Thanks for the feedback folks.
I'm already very much of the mindset that I should concentrate on the camera at the moment, I've no burning desire to start any sort of digital editing at the moment.

Any pointers on what I've done well or not (e.g. composition, light levels, shutter speed etc.) very welcome.

  • But just getting the hang of levels in Lightroom adds so much fun to photography. What can be a good but flat shot straight out of camera, can become a great shot in Lightroom. Why not have all the fun straight away?

I've given up on recommending the purist view on photography. That's how I started out, with light meters and a film camera, and all it did was costing me a load of money with no results to show for it. A decent digital camera, shooting raw, and Lightroom would've made it both cheaper and more interesting / fun.

  • Really? Editing is boring. Necessary, but boring. Capturing that perfect moment, and knowing you've done it without even looking at the back of the camera, awesome.

  • I missed that very much, especially when I know a film's characteristic (Portra VC, NC, Superia, Reala etc.) which sometime is enough.

Now I spend significantly longer in Lightroom trying to get the photo colour just right (to me).

  • But whatever floats your boat. Not trying to argue. And Landslide, looking good. I'd just say practise makes perfect, keep shooting stuff you enjoy, and you'll reap the rewards. Also, you can always come back to some of your earlier photos and re-edit them ;-)

  • Why not have all the fun straight away?

Because it's too many things to deal with for a beginner, and this has nothing to do with analog vs. digital, and "oldskool" or not.
If you want to get anywhere, you'll do yourself a big favour if you internalize / practice the basic stuff first.
    Including, but not limited to:
Understanding how cameras work; when and how to use different shutter speeds and apertures.
Knowing your camera(s) inside out so you could use them blindfolded.
Try to figure out what images you personally would actually like to create,
as well as figure out what makes images "interesting" in general.

  • I like that.

  • That's good, hope it doesn't roll back over him

  • I have just received a D3200 in the post. For my gf's birthday. If she works out I'm buying her a present that I really want, i'll be in trouble.

  • anyone got any views on the nikon d7100? I was advised to get it by the guy in the camera repair centre after my nikon d90 gave up the ghost. anyone got one, can compare it to similar models?

  • Can anyone recommend my Mum a canon camera and lens for product photography (mostly small porcelain objects) sadly her friend that did photography for her passed away recently so she has to do it herself now.

Somewhere around the £1000 mark for both.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Has she got any experience with DLSRs?

  • No. If it's being sold on here in 6 months time you will know what has happened.

You may not have been asking me. ah well.

  • Ha I wasn't, but i'm sure she'll do very well.

Anything decent with a 50-70mm lens would do. I'd get a lightbox / cheap studio lights as well to make sure shots are consistent

Yup a fair bit and she was a lot more into film photography before I came along and ruined everything.

Cheers, we have a lightbox and studio lights already for some reason.

  • My D7000 has the err blinking on the top screen again.
I bought the body as a refurb unit in April (ish) and all was fine until July when the err appeared.
AF works, the shutter fires, the image does not record.
I tried different lenses, settings, memory cards, all to no avail.
Took it back to Cameraworld in Chelmsford, where i bought it, and they sent it off the Nikon for repairs.
"it'll be 2-3 weeks" they said.
after 4 weeks I called for an update, it was a Saturday, an dthey said it is only open Mon-Fri, but they will chase it and call me Monday lunch time.
Tuesday afternoon, I got a call saying they are waiting for parts.
Next Monday i call again, was told they would chase and call me back that morning.
    no call.
The following week i did the same, to the same result.
On the 7th week i called, got the same reply, i mentioned it was the 3rd time i was promised a call back, and have yet to receive one.
    They didnt call.
Tuesday I sent a shitty email to them complaining about it their terrible customer service
Later that dayI get a call saying my camera is back and ready to collect.
I did not receive an email back from them.
10 days after picking up my camera, the err returns.
Tomorrow i get to go the Chelmo again and see if they will give me my money back.
    What are my chances?

    Tl;dr

I bought a camera, it went wrong, warranty repaired, now it gone wrong again (less than 2 weeks after the repair) can I get a refund?

  • Fark..

    I don't think they'll give you a refund.
Hope they give you another body out of obligingness while you wait, again, for yours to be repaired.

    Good luck!

  • Shite that, you think Nikon is actually getting it or a third party?

Never really heard a bad thing about their repairs
