Trying out Shadows / Highlights in PS

Really like this from a few pages back, going to give it a go

Cheers man! I like that currys one, nice and bleak. Could do with a crop and straightening maybe?

You know what? I did rotate the original (by adding a horizontal guide and rotating the image to get the rooftop to line up with it), and I swear it didn't look quite right. Is there a PS 'lens distortion correct' function I should be using?
And I cropped it! I took it in on the sides to get just the building, and removed where the curbs met at the bottom, which I thought drew the eye too much. Do you think it could be tighter?

Re: currys pic. Lose car park until it's similar to the sky in size. I reckon.

And a bit of horizontal perspective correction ( under manual lens correction in PS)

Nah, keep the car park. The white diagonal lines make the picture. It does need straightening.
Also careful with the highlights/ shadows. Too much and it looks HDR, which is always shit. Another technique is to make two layers, curves for the dark bits in one, and vice versa, then paint them together.
But good shot.

I took a little digital compact with me on a recent works trip to a railway depot in the former yugoslavia... these came out of it... no treatment except a tiny bit of cropping and some auto-correct in MS Office Picture Manager because that's all I know how to do. I have higher res originals.

These are nice, first one would look good in black and white with the contrast and clarity pumped up a bit I reckon

Thanks a lot! Yep occasionaly I get to go somewhere interesting. That's a good idea about B&W Sam, might try it. The place was so atmospheric I could have stayed for days.
^^DFP, something pretty edgy about that, but a real connection, in the eyes, like yup dis is good. Tools in background, foot heading out of shot, all leave unanswered questions. Like it.

Love the last one WSI, it's brilliant.
And Olly, awesome work with the photos, go to show that a high end digital isn't always necessary as long you got the eyes for it.

This week is turning out to be homeworking-lunch-time-back-yard-photography-experimentation week. Yesterday it was instant film in a medium format camera. Today it's been infra red filter on X100 day.
Looks like it'll work, but I need more sunlight that the conditions are currently supplying and more foliage/grass than I have in the garden.

I have a hoya R72, I love it.
Coupled with an nd8 filter and a tripod you. An get some great shots. -

I'm yet to read any guides on using it properly. My test shot was just hand held, but I recall people talking about long exposures on tripods using ND filters. Is there an advantage to a long exposure with an ND over a shorter, non-filtered shot? The X100 has a built in ND filter though, so that should make playing about a bit easier and cheaper. My IR filter is just an £8 Ebay job.
Also, skin tends to look un-natural when you ETTR and pull the exposure back in LR. Its great for some things though, I use it a lot for low-contrast stuff.
