  • ....and magic lantern!

  • Nah camcorder - and nowt to pricey, something that could be taken out to rough/wet places.

  • Not for me, I have no idea about video.

  • go pro?

  • Was going to suggest Flip HD but go pro is much better.

  • Gopro and a few spare batteries if your getting a hero 3 and plan to use the wifi and app as a screen!

  • Only thing is it costs more than a used dslr.

  • Very quick portrait of Alex Dowsett, UK TT Champ I grabbed the other day.

  • I think he was bigger when he was at school.

As I have mentioned before, I am going to Vietnam for 3 weeks, it's now coming up pretty soon - just over a month - and I have a feeling I will fill up my 20GB of SD cards I have at home pretty quickly.
Is there a cheap way to transfer files off an SD card without a laptop, or should I just buy more SD cards?

  • SD cards are getting pretty cheap, for instance 32gb SDHC's are down in the £15 region at the moment.

If you want to spend a bit of money, you can get a portable storage unit that you essentially plug your memory card into and it copies the data to an internal disk. These cost maybe around £50+£100+ depending on what you buy. Jobo Giga One is an example.

Carrying any other tech with you?

  • Bring more memory cards. The more your cards you spread your photos on, the safer they are.

Hmm a cursory Google would have told me that. I'm getting old.

Thanks for pointing that out, I'll just buy £50 worth of SD cards. Do I really need super dooper 95 MB/s? I was under the assumption that the onboard cache was enough space for ~10-15 RAW files at high speed continuous shooting so ultra fast cards aren't necessary.

Not planning on taking any other tech other than GF's point and shoot.

    Very good point.

  • You can always fill a card and post it home, if you trust the postal system...

As for speed, depends on your camera. If you're shooting rapid fire it can be good. If you're shooting HD video then worth considering also. There's also an element of future proofing, and also the speed at which you can copy photos off the cards to your PC/Mac/laptop.

  • I hate having memory cards bigger than 4gb (maybe 8gb if shooting RAW) end up with way too much stuff on the card, making it too "valuable". Ends up rather redundant it being that size as you need to back up many times before it ever approaches fullness.

And do you really want to walk around with 32gb of your photos? even if you have backups, would suck to lose it for some randomz to find it.

I had to buy one recently as anything else seemed shit value, would much rather have a pile of smaller ones.

  • Mexico last year I took a pile of 4gb cards. Best to spread them as thinly as possible: if one gets corrupted or lost, its no biggie. If they all get lost, you're SOL.

Depend on what speed, for instance the 45mbps one is slightly more expensive, 95mbps more so.

  • Nice, Spotter.

    How?

  • Cheers. My G9 and one of these:

  • Brown Willy?

*edit - on reflection, Brown Willy looks smaller

  • Not the first time I have heard those words.

Hi Spotter, I was going to ask how the G9 was holding up. glad to see you're using it. did I give you the underwater housing with the camera or did you buy it separetely? i can't remember. I hope it's my old one, as if it isn't that means i've got a G9 housing sitting in a box fuck knows where!

  • Ha, it is yours yes. Great deal thanks very much!

  • You all make valid points re: smaller SD cards.

    Spotter that's a bit fruity...

Sweet bridge photos. Makes me want to go do some urbex again.
