  • ^^ that one has no perspective correction... It was the middle of the day with unbelievably harsh light so I just overexposed by a little and then pulled the contrast way down. Trying to avoid the HDR look but wanted to capture the flat tones of all the 60s buildings. May have gone too far tho.

I actually think it looks better slightly blown out, and this is coming from a contrast nazi! it's got that slightly Brighton'esqe deserted middle of the day feel to it. Understated look.

  • Thought I was going mad for a moment, just did a comparison tests between my Nikon D600 and D7000 have just noticed the exposure level meters on these 2 are the other way around. On the D600, it's -_|_+, - on the left and + on the right. But on the D7000, it's +_|_-, + on the left and - on the right... If memory serves, the D2X is the same as the D600, but the D3100 is the same way as the D7000. What's the logic behind this??

  • No idea but that confused me when I went from my D200 to my D700.

  • I'm seriously considering starting a new photo hosting site based loosely on the old Flickr but cleaner, more minimal.

    DO IT!
    please

Have you looked to see if you can change it round? I can on my D700 - it's one of the custom settings (under controls).

Just checked my D200 and you can't change it on that - but both bodies are the same way round: -ve to the right

  • Cheers guys, I have found the answer, you can change it and apparently Nikon has finally changed the default setting to the normal way round since the D800 so I can only presume try did the same with the D600 and yes I can change it under custo setting. Thanks.

  • ...(free) alternative to "downloadr" and "bulkr" to batch-download complete flickr-stream (osx) ?

  • Brian May, his minder, and someone else.

  • awesome, what a scoop!
unless of course you're his official photographer

  • Great stuff! Needs to be seen but embedding them seems to be blocked... The sixth one in HK is my fave.

Thanks. Yeah my flickr account has max copyright/privacy settings. Might relax them a bit.

The good old cityscape at night in HK, I do miss it. Did you grab some good old bargain of camera equipment while you were there?

Nah, didn't really do much shopping in Hong Kong.

  • Another one, wasn't sure at first but its growing on me...

Really liking this. The flat contrast matches the faded paint colours perfectly. Nice work.

On a side note, how do people get the shots looking so "clean" as in no visible compression or oversharpening? I seem not to be able to do this (using PS)

  • Save as jpg @ 90%, and be very careful with the sharpening tool. I tend to do a few versions in lightroom, but you can do the same in PS, then compare. Then leave it for a while and come back to it with a fresh pair of eyes, that way at least I tend to avoid most pitfalls of over editing stuff.

  • Badger set is here

Thanks for the kind words dude.
I always just shoot RAW and never really go near the sharpening tool at all unless there was noise reduction performed and once its all said and done just save as jpeg at the maximum quality.

Out of camera jpeg quality varies greatly from camera to camera. Canon and Sony are known to be a bit heavy handed whereas Olympus and Fuji are known for good jpegs. To be honest, it only really matters if you're pixel peeping; at low ISOs, its hard to tell the difference between an OMD and a 5D mkiii unless you get right in there.

  • I have a friend who's looking for a digital camera with a budget of around £100 - Can anybody suggest anything?

    Cheers

  • what kind of camera? compact? new or second hand?

£100 is not a huge amount to play with

  • Anything Canon in that range; if they're willing to spend that amount on a new camera they're not going to worry about top quality. Then again, their phone may be adequate if $150 is their budget.

  • In that price range I'd go for the best Panasonic lumix I could afford. Very good cameras.

  • my photos can now be shared.

here is a cool skyscraper in nagoya:

  • Thanks guys, I'll suggest the lumix. I think this is what he was looking at anyway.

    Cheers

  • @sugoi - nagoya skyscraper is ace. Struggling to figure out the actual shape of the building, but thats good. Share more!

  • Actually, I'll put a few up. These are mostly experimenting and I'm very open to critique or guidance. Aware these are not very original but was playing with a 50mm on an EOS 500D.
