  • They are in colour yes, handy to know.

  • I was thinking of buying that.
    I wish I'd bought that.
You'd better take some good pictures and post them here.

  • ^^ will do boss.

^ It does look very easy but it kind of defeats the point of this camera, I've got a few other cameras I can use if I need too.

Also I'm thinking of doing a little bit of light hacking on my Canon PowerShot SD780 IS by putting CHDK on it. Its a great little camera, literally the same size as a credit card:

Basically CHDK makes your Canon do a whole load of stuff that Canon didn't want you to do e.g.

RAW files, bracketing, full manual control over exposure, zebra mode, live histogram, grids, etc.

That being said for such a tiny bit of kit it already takes cracking photos.

I also should point out that this camera has had a really hard life (been dropped, got soaked, and flew out of my jersey pocket at about 25mph as I sprinted down a French road) and its still works perfectly, the metal body is great and the screen seemingly is impervious to scratches.

  • I'd love to hear how that goes, Spotter. I had that little Canon and loved the size and weight – it's smaller than an iPhone – but the lack of manual controls really got on my nerves eventually.

I use a Ricoh GRD 3 now which does all the things that you're wanting the Canon to do, but it complements the settings with customisable rockers, buttons and jog-wheels around the grip for you to manually change ISO, shutter and aperture without having to delve into menus. If you do hack the Canon to give you more control you'll just spend more time in the menu system, which is never good. I think a GRD would suit better, albeit at more expense.

  • I just watched this. Gives a great insight into war Journalism and the role the photographers play in telling a story.

  • Interesting trailer. I think its hard to make a documentary like this and not be gratuitous with the gore and suffering.

  • nice. got copies / link?

  • I'm selling my Zenitar 16mm fisheye lens, with Canon EF mount for £90 ono. Link.

  • I'm not sure if this is the right thread, but does anyone have any advice (or links to good advice) on shooting video with a DSLR?

I've been wondering about having a play with my D7000 but especially the focus is bugging me - either I have to have it on continual focus and it hunts the whole time (noisy and annoying to watch) or I use manual focus which I'm incapable of using with any skill!

Also, I have no idea about the extent to which playing with aperture can induce artistic shots with shallow DoF and how one controlls the amount of light on the sensor etc.

In short I'm a complete novice to the world of video and while I'm obviously aware that the D7000 may be a poor tool for the job in relation to a dedicated video camera, it's also what I've got.

I'd like to have a play, but I'm yet to record anything even vaguely worthwhile!

  • Use manual focus and practice a lot, you'll get the hang of it soon

Low f-number = short DoF = nice shots if you like that kinda thing

Slightly less low f-number means slightly longer DoF and easier to keep the right things in focus

I'd consider a dedicated mic aswell, makes a huge difference for videos

  • Basically this^ practice makes perfect.

  • Slighlty boring video on shutter speed vs fps, but helped me understand it more when I started with video... Part 6: Shutter Speed & FPS on Vimeo

Hardest thing I found when shooting on a DSLR was keeping it stable. Lens with good IS helps.

  • There's no external microphone socket on a D7000.

  • Thanks will have a play and check the video (once it's buffered...).

    @wiganwill, I think mine does:

Mine looks like this and the bottom left jack says "mic".

  • The D3100 doesn't have a mic, but that's been fixed in the D3200. AFAIK it's the only recent Nikon that doesn't, everything after it has had one. However I may be wrong.

  • I really love my GRD, these are straight from the camera.

Yeah I had a GRDII, absolutely stunning little thing. And square format, too!

Unfortunately I dropped mine on its lens. It's currently on ebay as spares or repairs (and I allowed to say that?) as I'm trying to save money at the moment.

Yeh, you are right. I've never been interested in video though so haven't even bothered to read the manual about it.

  • It depends completely on what you're shooting. I know people who exclusively use the DSLR rig, and others who only rely on it as a back up.

Excellent, thank you. I did not know that! Not sure that I understand where they got their rule of thumb setting the shutter-speed to twice the FPS though?

Anyway, I still recon that this photo came out better than any of the video I tried...

  • Anyone interested in a quick buy of my X100? Comes with other bits consists of
