  • They're all really awesome, especially like this one. What camera?

    Panasonic GF1

  • Been out for a long walk with my GX1 today and I'm growing increasingly frustrated with it. Keep missing shots I know wouldn't be a problem with my 5D. Sure, it's a lot smaller and therefor with me more, but missing shots sucks.

I know this one is up to me, but my 5D i usually had on full manual as it has two dials for aperture + shutter speed. The GX1 has only one though, so it's mostly in aperture priority, but for some reason my head then turns off a little bit and I forgot to set aperture carefully. + I miss the short depth of field of a good lens on the 5D.

Would an x-e1 be worth the extra monies? Would be a good coupla hundred on top of what I'd get for the GX1.

Or maybe it's time to get a good neg scanner and go 100% film

Which lens? Much retouching? They're lovely photographs...

I feel the same about my X100. Subject not moving and have time to set up the shot? No problem; great images. Want to grab a shot of my frenetic baby? No chance, particularly if he's closer than the ~80cm min focus distance and I'm forced to use the laggy evf... I find myself reaching for the D700 far more than I hoped I would because of the AF speed and accuracy. Le sigh.

    o-md e-m5?

  • few from the pentax archives.

  • o-md e-m5?

Probably what I'd go for, knowing what I know now about Fujis' quirks...

  • I've UTFS but couldn't find the answer.

Has anyone ever been on a good, preferably not horrifically expensive (say sub £100) photography or 'digital darkroom' courses that they would recommend? Based in london, preferably either evenings or weekends. If not are there any good books to get one started or should I just take my camera and teach myself?

I have a camera, i have a vague understanding about how it works and even a basic grasp of aperture, shutter speed, ISO and all that stuff (I told you it was vague). But by golly my photos are cack. Should I just go out and practise a bit more? Are there any forumengers who offer classes?

How the fuck am i supposed to be a hipster if i can't even take a photo?

    pleaseandthankyou.

  • Get out and shoot more. Ask for tips on here, there's a load of people that will help you out.

There's some good photography books that will teach you about subjects that kind of thing and the photography basics but the majority of it is better learnt yourself by doing it.

I'd describe digital darkroom as the work done after you've taken a picture not the actual capturing process what one is it you need help with?

  • Learn by doing.

I've bought them and they're well worth the monies

  • o-md e-m5?

Yeah I've thought about that. Dunno if it's just me or the camera, gonna have a long hard think about it before I throw more money at camera.

  • a couple from hiking in the lakes the other day.

  • oof. Looks like a good trip. Top one is great, lovely colours. Would love to see the top of those mountains though, but that's being picky.

  • those are really good - 1st and last especially.

1st would be awesome if you could have got the hikers a couple of minutes earlier down the trial as it would give them more space to walk into - they are a bit central - but thats just me nitpicking - the colours/tones are amazing

Thanks, and yes you're both right I should have got the tops in and more space for the hikers (my brother and a mate).

  • Be weary of the tutorial books, there's nothing in there that you won't find online for free, and in photography you'll learn more by doing as ParryMan said above.

  • Really harsh light where I am at the moment. I quite like this tangle.

Thanks man, I kind of suspected that was the answer. Any book recommendations would be good.

I think i mean photoshop/lightroom techniques. I know you can't polish a turd but I feel i could do with knowing a bit more but it's a bit daunting knowing where to start.

    Cheers man.

Very true. I found the George Jardine tutorials to be the exception of the rule though. Great videos that rattles through everything you need to know in Lightroom without bogging it down unnecessarily. Found them quite inspiring too tbh

  • Few Quick Lightroom tips:
    1) Go easy on the clarity slider if you have to use it. And I'm talking no more than 10/15 either way.
    2) When using the Highlights and/or Shadows careful not to use them too much, and definitely be careful using them both at the same time. Otherwise your photos will look HDR and we all know they look shit.
    3) Don't forget to sort your white balance out! So many people forget this. Even if its a jpg, you can still correct manually in the Colour correction/HSL box.
    4) If you have 4, the noise reduction and lens correction tool (especially the vert/horizontal straightens are a godsend). Yes I know you can do this in photoshop, but who has time for that faff?

  • How the fuck am i supposed to be a hipster if i can't even take a photo?

Hipsters can't take photos. You are a hipster. :)

  • Here's good book for those new to photography. Like others have mentioned you will also learn a lot just going out there and taking photos and learning from your mistakes..
