who is the Leica (digital) expert of this parish? Specifically M8. Have been offered a well used body, what should I look for?
-
• #14142
No expert but I think they had issues with the sensor delaminating so check some white wall shots at f/16 & infinity focus...

The M8 sensor was fine, it's the M9 one that has issues but Leica will replace it gratis (just takes time). There's no real issue with the camera, just that it's a crop sensor so you end up buying all the wrong lenses if you plan to move onto full frame Leica.
Cosmetics are important for a lot of buyers so brassing affects prices but actually makes it easier not to baby.
The M8 is pretty good for IR photography, the lack of IR filter makes it a great sensor for B&W but most people end up with IR filters for colour photography so that adds to the cost of lenses.
Sometimes the rangefinder gets knocked out of calibration or drifts, it's possible to diy it but the proper calibration method is complex. You may need a diopter to match any eyesight deficiencies you have, it's difficult to sharply focus a rangefinder if you can't see the 2 images clearly.
Batteries are quite expensive and make sure you get the charger. Chargers can overheat and shut down if you plan on using them in hot climates.
You can take some amazing photos with an M8, and a huge amount of duds!
