I get to cross-post because I can... well, not really, but do take a look at http://www.pixelcharter.com/ and my post on it here: http://www.lfgss.com/thread6107-56.html#post2439105

Anyone got any use for a Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.8-4.5 II USM Lens?

If you're giving it away I might!
Talking of things that are being given away, my 5D mk1 isn't, but I am selling it, http://www.lfgss.com/thread73319.html

^ nice! is it straight out of camera? I'd be tempted to fiddle with levels a bit in lightroom
-
• #1032
tiny bit fiddled with in lightroom, I didn't want to do too much as i liked the kind of washed out look.
Just upped the saturation in the blues and added a bit of a vignette

^ nice stuff.
How come you stitched them? Gonna print stuff super large?
-
• #1036
yes and angle of view/format, the 24 becomes something like a 17mm and a lot of my stuff is 16x9ish.

Ran across this - Like bike snob, but for photographers. Amusing to a non-photographer. Apologies if repost.

MrSmyth, when you stitch your images are the photos taken from the same point? Or are the positions offset? Nice pics. Was that photo you posted of the NT (in the architecture thread) taken the same way?
-
• #1039
yes and no.
if i use the shift lenses on tripod then i shift left and right and move the camera the same amount of mm in the opposite direction using one of these:
so if i shift 10mm one way on the lens i move the camera 10mm the other way, this keeps the lens in the same position and stops parallax errors when stitching. thing is with the subject so far away and the lens so wide in the tower pic it's not actually necessary as there is nothing in the foreground. for interiors it's important to be parallax free as objects are usually close to the camera.
the reeds were shot handheld and just roughly pointed left and right and CS5 left to do it's thing.
the building shot was a mix of vertical shift up then a tilt up to fit the top in and some CSmagic, you usually have to go over it and sort any stitching errors though.
you can use a nodal slide and just rotate the camera on the nodal point but i don't like the look of wide angle cyclindrical projection

Been recommended this lense http://www.canon.co.uk/For_Home/Product_Finder/Cameras/EF_Lenses/Standard_and_Medium_Telephoto/EF_50mm_f1.8_II/
to go with the standard lense that the 550D comes with, thoughts?

Great lens for the money, keep in mind the crop factor of your camera, the lens will be equivalen of a 75mm (?) lens on a full frame camera
-
• #1042
Cheers, MrSmyth. Not that I can afford any of that tilt shift gear - just wondering like. :)
Great lens for the money that 50mm. Creates lovely bokeh. I'll say it again. Bokeh. hides from photoben

Just upgraded from a Nikon D80 to a 550D but decided to just get the body and the 50mm prime as, in my experience, kit lenses are poo. Been wanting to switch to Canon for a good while now. So far image quality is great, much better than the D80 especially in low light. Just messing with the video mode now... I have no idea how to use a Canon...

IMO 50mm 1.8 should be a kit lens option on every camera.
-
• #1048
Why would you want an (effective) 75mm lens as your 'standard' lens?
-
• #1049
yes it is a bit 'zoomed in'. i will be buying a decent zoom lens when i get cash, just didnt wanna bother with the 18-55

Mmm, aye I always forget about crop factor.
Well a fast prime option seems like it'd be a good idea.
That's true.
