Hael:
Try the "a very short introduction to...." series. I think these are great small scale primers on various topics and there are individual books on a wide range of physics and cosmological topics!
I thought this show was great. The science may have been simple but it captured the awe inspiring scale and majesty of cosmic scale reality.
The highlight? a casually placed clipped of sunset on mars as filmed by the spirit rover. thats sunset. on fucking mars! utterly crazy. Its footage that never fails to send shivers down my spine (much like the hygens landing on titan footage) truly incredible.
Also loved the stuff about voyager passing beyond the heliopause. Am i right of thinking that something weird is happening with voyager 1? like its accelerating unexpectedly or something?
the whole deal just made me think of carl sagan really.

I was going to post up the video, but I decided against it. What band was he in before that? The rock one? Oh and I need to speak to you about Mairead and Tabitha, seems we might have the same friends...
Oh and total eclipse - in a canoe, in the middle of a mud lake near Santa Marta in Colombia. Strangest experience ever when birds start to roost as the light goes.

try cycling around antares then
after watching the programme wonders of the solar system last night there was a patrick moore programme about the search for extra terrestrial life, 1 hour long on BBC4 or something like that that is a philosophical arguement if ever there was one
they did all the number crunching and the probability etc
it will be repeated on sat sun night for all you space fans out there well worth a watch -
• #43
and on a philosophical note
if there is a god and we are the only people out there in the universe why did he put a ticking time bomb right on our door step that will possibly destroy the human race for ever
does that prove or disprove god, is he just having a trial run with earth and ironing out any mistakes before he sets his real planet earth up ( without internet trolls, mankinds love of war, religion ! ) all the things he got wrong first time aroundwe have got 5 billion years to locate and find a way of getting to another hospitable planet
are we gonna make it ? maybe a poll will provide us with the definitive answer -

We need a list.

admittedly i don't think i'll be there either, but it is a wierd feeling that mankind could be permanently wiped from the face of the, well universe, whole space thing
all that would be left are the spanners and bits of space junk that have been discarded from satelites over the last 40 yearsjunk the only sign that we were ever here
how fitting !
