  • The threads came off my Park Tool extractor last time I used it.

    Shit tool... I've wrecked 2.

  • @Tom, sounds a bit oooer to me.....yay Balki Power!

  • Still don't know how a torque wrench works. What if you're really weak, or really fucking strong? How can it be accurate?

Whats it reaches the required torque releases if its an automatic one or if its the older type is has a gauge on it. If you are too weak to use a torque then you are too weak to live.

They have a long lever which covers the really weak. And when it gets to the desired torque it spins so doesn't matter how strong you are, you will not be able to do the nut any tighter.

  • ^ well, it clicks, not spins. I could imagine that being quite dangerous!

Halfords pro torque wrenches are great and have a lifetime guarantee (like all Halfords Pro tools, which I think are excellent mid-range tools). Not sure about long-term accuracy though as IIRC they don't do a calibrating service.

But that's not much of an issue unless you're a professional mechanic - and if you are, I'd go with a Snap-On one like mine, as they do calibrating to make sure it's always accurate

The smaller ones with ranges suitable for bikes are around £60 IIRC (with larger ones going for up to a grand :O) which is pretty expensive like all Snap On stuff, but you are getting the absolute best. Halfords ones are half the price.

  • I just did a whole strip down with my cable cutters, it was the carthartic release I needed after a busy day.

  • Anyone know where to get a set of magnetic allen keys?

  • Yes, it's nice but a bit pricey.

Whatever, if you can afford Rapha, you can easily afford one of these...

  • Shit tool... I've wrecked 2.

    +1

  • I like the "Mighty" toolset and torque wrench- it survived a few months with us, which the PRO tool (twice the price) did not. Around £50 quid from us or Sonic do them, I think.

Favourite must be the P handled set of allen keys, ball driver on the long side, square ended on the short one.

Use a magnetiser/demagnetiser and do it yourself.

  • I've not got it but I bloody want it.
Park Tool tyre levers are shit..

  • I'd really like a torque wrench. I think DJ did some research and bought one for a decent price. It'd be good to find out.

  • Park Tool tyre levers are shit..

Yes. The Soma steel-cored ones are much better.

  • I think this undoes nearly everything on my bike except my pedals. Fits into a pocket. Nice.

  • Cranks, bottom bracket, headset cups, track nuts, cones?

    No.

  • long enough to torque thoughs bolts, and short enough to fit in a jersey pocket. Lovely

  • ;)

I have the TW2 (beam wrench style with gauge), although i got a good discount on it (was £35 at Ribble) it felt like a bit of an extravagance at the time. but i have found that i do now use it regularly and feel assured that nothing is too loose or too tight, which is nice, if you tend to worry about that sort of thing (although i never did until i got the wrench).

Think my other favourite 'extravagance' tool is a park tools shop tyre tool (TL-10), similar to that Crank brothers one someone posted here, but fits onto the axle. Bought out of sheer frustration when trying to fit some new tyres which were impossible with my feeble thumbs and was getting repeated pinch flats from the levers when tried using them. Love it now (but not really portable so can't rely on it for doing tyres on the go).

  • Campag make the ultimate tyre lever, meant for Hyperon wheels but work on anything and i have NEVER broken one!! Even work to help you lift off tubs. Other than that, the Campag nut cracker (even more rare than the silver cork screw) is very cool.
