still hoping for a dropout surprise
Does the route loop clockwise or anti-? Am thinking I can join you late into the ride from opposing didection. Earliest I can get to P'Bar is 9.30

@Benjam: My light is on its way. It's currently with Fussball, who sports a red vintage-y Pinarello. STE5 (Rolla kit, blue Dolan) should be with him, so find them and you'll have some lumens. Gimme a shout later and I'll come down to the station.
Best of luck to all. Fussball's optimistic "This'll be it", in response to a small shower just before 19:00, was followed by a king-size sheet of rain that's left me soaked through. Fingers crossed it dries up for you.

hope you all have a good ride. Thought I'd better rest my knee - absolutely nothing to do with the bad weather!
-
• #4255
Bugger me silly. I know I'm a fair way away, but it's 8:30pm and absolutely lashing it down. Hope you lot stay safe!

Fucking bollocks.
Thanks to Gus for the return ticket. I can get a bit superstitious, and the snapped front spoke was the last straw. Seeing as it happened about 1 minute after leaving the station, I took it as a sign to abandon (and didn't really want to have a compromised braking surface in those conditions, or fuck about retensioning until I'm more sure it's a one off rather than a trend).
I've replaced it now (only 2 spares left). Will thrash the wheel closer to home before our next outing, and see which of my 2 theories about the snappage is correct…
Thanks also for the offer of front wheels.
We need to make sure there is more than one confident navigateur of each route in attendance :/

Hope the rest of you enjoyed your short route/pub plan :)

I saw three cyclists with TNRC lights in Hadley Wood heading back to Town about half an hour ago. One looked like Fussballclub.

texas and i got caught in the worst of the rain on the way out and got totally soaked.
yeah shame about your wheel. i half know the route too, and was kicking myself for not knowing it well enough to lead the group.
but we did say a third of the route, then a pub stop, which is always a welcome tnrc event.
the ride back with middleofnowhere was fast and smooth, there was bit of headwind, but didn't hold us back much... -

I think we can all be proud to be part of the inaugural (and final)** VERY** Norths Drinks.
Good to meet you benjam, strange intro to the mighty TNRC but normal service will be resumed in a fortnight if you haven't been put off.
That said, it was good to be able to attack those hill with a bit more verve than I would have if the full route was a possibility. Also Polky and I had an excellent run back to town/

gutted for scarlett. a proper pain in the butt. however safety equals success. We opted to ride the hills and then a decent and thoroughly beautiful flat section. then we turned back much to ludwig's disappointment. My call not to do the full route without 100% certainty that we would make the train home or lose anyone at any point of the ride. That said it's my fault i don't know that ride well enough to lead it. Still we improvise. hope everyone enjoyed what they made of it as much as we did in the pub and on the train home. Des thinks the original wagon wheel was bigger today's version. I'm not so sure but it seems the TNRC has thrown up another debating point.
Great to share some time with mat, nick, cynthand gav over a pint
awesome climbing damo on the fixed. left me for dust. -

Looks like Wagon Wheel size is an important issue in Sheffield
-
• #4265
I have never seen any solid evidence that the wagonwheel has decreased in size. I am firmly in the camp that believes that, having had the wagonwheel as such a packed lunch staple, we are disappointed by scale when remembering back to such formative, and diminutive, times.
I guess this was all covered on the train tho, missing such intellectual cut and thrust must be one of the perils of riding back.

My first TRNC riding fixed, slightly fractured but enjoyable nonetheless. Any evening with 40ish miles, nice climbs, two pints of Guinness AND a Wagon Wheel is a winner in my book

Yes, that was Ben, Sean and me. We had a brilliant ride all the way straight to pizza where we bumped into butters, clockwork and truli before the rest of the mob showed up. Pink seemed reasonably satisfied with the outcome of today's football but admitted that he really is a Hellas Verona fan now. Ben and me rode down Swains and before we split we agreed that it will a piece of cake for him to break the North pizza record next week. I am still surprised that I was the only one who seemed to know the route.http://www.lfgss.com/post1532321-12710.html See you in two weeks.

• #4268
scarlett. glad the wheels, and the rails got you home.
fractured ride but some nice toblerone sections and a promise that a couple more of us will know the route next time.
as for next time at Potters Bar? might be in two weeks time. the TNRC will out.
good to catch up with many of you. well, all of you i guess. nice to see a lot of fixed wheels out there tonight too. the one important broken one aside

Thoroughly enjoyed, despite the navigational challenges. Ludwig you're a complete gent and it was a great idea to ride back in via norths to meet friends new and old. I * will defeat that pizza record next week and see y'all for the next TNRC the following. Thanks again to Ludwig for navi, Sean for the drafting home and of course nick for the most powerful light I could have ever imagined.
Also, it's evident that I can't climb for shit so I'll be on the bmc for a while before I does it fixed!

.Confirmed, sighting of the rare Ludwig.

great weather in the end, fears of a downpour affecting the majority were unfounded. it must have been incredibly galling to have ridden through that and then have no more rain.
nice to see everyone out last night. here's to the next one.wagon wheels,i saw the packet early on and thought "why have i eaten so much today?". I agree with matt (middleofnowhere), they've not shrunk but our memory plays them as big as your head. i have a vague recollection of french and saunders doing some sketch about a wagon wheel (dawn french in making reference to chocolate shock!) but can't find it.
(i'm going to see old crow on friday) -

Was lovely to be riding the TNRC fixed for my first time properly.
Shame about your wheel Scarlett, especially as you made the effort to brave the rain on the ride out.
Look forward to completing that route again sometime soon, it certainley lives up to it's name.
I'd probably do that route at the weekend more often if it didn't involve a miserable ride out/back through north london.
Thanks for the light Balmain.

Get a network card. It's cheap on the train. Or do Oyster overground (cheaper still) to Barnet or Hadley Wood.
-
• #4274
So it can't be long until the end of tnrc season. How many are left and are there any biggies? Twas still fun last night even though it was cut short, especially with lazy leavers. ha ha.
-
• #4275
3 left. Last one's a 'biggie'.
i may be out, still thinking
