  • "We'll go on ahead and get beers for everyone the early train home and not wait for everyone." DTM.

Yeah. That was a tad poor. WGC is a wasteland. No off license and no stashed beers vs train in 5 minutes = go home.

    Sorry.

  • Bright times! Except, maybe for the Front Wheel of Doom. I hope it's in the sodding bin (well, going back from whence it came anyway).

I was sorry to see this get a bit fractured at the end. It's not a race. I thought it was pretty antisocial behaviour for a massive pack to just leave the wait stop, with plenty more still to arrive there. But that's just me, an old hippy who thought that the TNRC leaves no-one behind. I reckon I am not alone in feeling this, but that others are too polite, or just pissed off, to mention it. Anyone else?

Thanks TNRC for a really excellent ride. I absolutely love that stretch up to the last stop. Magical. And never has a can of sugary horrid caffeinated shite tasted so damn good, nor a greasy old Bhaji, than standing on that platform.

The euphoria is still ringing in my shorts. Or something.

  • I see Skully is still on his journey to embrace technical fabric:-)

...And joggers' nipples! Ouch! Fuck that I'm going back to Wool. Technical my arse, pikey more like.

  • Baselayer :stoopidnoob:

  • If anyone had listened to me, I was trying to tell you where an Off License in WGC is, down Handside Lane. But, you rode off into the night, leaving a stricken rider.

Tim, Jonny, come back and save us from ourselves.

(that sounds angrier than it should, but the point should probably be made)

  • It's 10.35pm. By the time you get there, you'll manage to find fuck all places to buy booze… or anything. It's dead after 10pm.

^something like that, followed by "oh right, see ya, bye, fuck off then."

@skully - as you know by now, it's kind of traditional that the odd high-summer TNRC ends up in a bit of a sprint on the homeward leg. But only with the knowledge that there are people who know the route riding in groups other than the front one, and that people stop at ambiguous junctions for a quick regroup.

Riding off the front on the outward leg is more of a no-no, particularly if you don't know where you're going, and especially if you ride 6 abreast, or in the oncoming lane; even moreso if it's a B-road with sporadic fast moving traffic/sweeping bends/blind dips, punctuated every mile with signs reminding people that speed kills/think/slow down etc; and also when there's 3 to 4 cars queued up behind, getting twitchy, FFS.

    Two abreast, please.

  • Despite the mechanicals and whatnot I had a lot of fun. I could never live in the countryside but sheeeeet do I love riding there! Tis a pity the group got split the way it it did and that I didn't see the front group pretty much all night but ah well, shit happens. It was still a larf. I think the sound of Sam's wheel will haunt me forever though... :) Lovely group out last night. Looking forward to the next one already. Cheers Scarlett for organising and cheers Des for map duties at the back. See y'all bitches in a fortnight.

Agreed, there were a few heart in mouth moments last night with cars, which I am not sure that the riders involved were even aware of. As well as the b-roads, riding wide on blind corners in the lanes is also a bad idea.

    Accidents DO happen.

  • I feel bad being this negative about a ride that I really, really enjoyed.

It was bright times, for sure.

  • Defo bright times.

  • ^something like that, followed by "oh right, see ya, bye, fuck off then."

I did also shout "turn down Handside Lane for a shop", before the "fuck off bit". I'm always eager to help people cope with their brushes with WGC. It's a hell hole. It can destroy you.

  • Hmm...I may have acquired a mildly chafed pair of jewels - most unusual, and the only blot on an otherwise lovely evening.

Mashton, WGC reminded me of one of those ghost towns that would pop up periodically in Diana Rigg erz avengers, creepy.

  • Great ride everyone. I was so appreciative that Scarlett and co waited for us after the wheel problems - thank you. The last stretch was really nice - almost completely car-free roads. The sun going down on the outward ride was also pretty special. Good to meet some new faces too - and an especially impressive female turnout!

  • re:spilts ... Point taken Scarlett.

    ditto two abreast.

  • Really slick (and safe) through-and-off from jaygee, jung, and spaghettihoops last night. Team pursuit squad in the making…?

  • Is "through and off" when you pull off almost immediately when you get to the front, keeping a small group in a sort of constant rotating pattern?

If so, I did a bit of this on a recent sportive with a friend and a random wheel. It was great.

  • ha...... i thouroughly enjoyed that bit... we got a good little rythm going for a while.

Wished I'd heard that over the blood and testosterone washing around in my ears.

  • Different, but a really enjoyable night - German efficiency at the back and Argentinian flair up front. Almost worth the trip out to revisit the brave new world of Welwyn Garden City at the the end. Still not convinced that anyone actually lives there.

Sterling effort from Braker and Nhatt nursing that wheel to its demise over the last few miles and good fun in the trailing group with Wools on sweeper duties. Lovely route for summer evening riding, looking forward to the next one.

Yes, also known as 'bit and bit'. Length of turn on the front varies. Some TTT squads agree a set number of pedalstrokes per turn.

  • ha...... i thouroughly enjoyed that bit... we got a good little rythm going for a while.

Rapidly degenerated into opportunistic wheelsucking / sandbagging / wobbly sprinting (that might have just been me and Sasmon) as we got into seemingly endless rotations of the WGC one way system. The route to the station seemed to be one of ever decreasing circles...

  • Like a circle in a spiral, like a wheel within a wheel ...

  • how many laps? that was fun

  • We should ask to dj, who lead us back there:)

  • Lessons that were learned.

    1. Ride 2 abreast and listen for calls single up when you hear "Car back!"
    2. Don't follow anybody with a Garmin whose name starts with a J
    3. Never go off the front or you will offend hippies
    4. Roundabouts are great
    5. Don't expect to find beer in WGC unless you are accompanied by Mashton
