Papercrate, how did you get on with the 107mm bottom bracket? I'm not sure whether to go for the 107 or 111mm size? Any advice (from anyone) would be great.

107mm was the right answer for me. Chainline is pretty much perfect.

Cheers for that... I decided to go ahead with the 107mm, and the chainline is pretty perfect too... made me smile.

Does anyone know where I could get a left crankarm for the sturmey archer?
-

Probably direct from the Taiwan factory that stamps them. I'd email Sunrace Asia and see if you can get a replacement. If it was defective maybe they'll send you a replacement free!

Could a user of the Sturmey Archer FCT** cranks comment on the Q-factor with bottom bracket axle size. Thanks...
-
• #34
Not an expert in Q-factor but mine seems pretty tight on a 107mm BB. No pedal strike or anything even remotely near that on 170mm cranks (although I should say I am running some fairly narrow, cheap, Wellgo pedals and I don't tend to corner too aggressively).

Thanks papercrate, it is the width that is of interest to avoid knee pain. I noticed some SA FCT20 cranks on eBay for £35 new and I suspect new SA is better than risking 20+ year old Shimano aluminium. Isn't it? I have late 1970s and 1980s Shimano 600 Arabesque and FC-6207 cranks with Q factors of 140mm and 145mm both on 110mm BB which is great but I'm a little worried about their strength (or current strength to age ratio). I'm cheap too - mostly because the bicycle is often left locked up in town without me.

sturmys are fine, got some on the beater....

Got myself a set too, however my current 122mm BB obviously put the chainline way off even when I switched the chainring to the inside of the crank arm.
So should I go for the recommended 103mm Sunrace BB or go with a better quality 107mm as there's a lot more choice for the same price range.
I'm assuming the effective difference from the recommended 103mm is only 2mm in the chainline which is quite marginal seeming that a couple of you guys got it working with a 107mm? Apologies in advance if I sound a little pedantic on getting a perfect chainline :)

I bought the cranks too. I was under the impression they'd give a chainline of 45mm with a 103mm BB. Is this correct? (And is it the same with Sugino RD2?)

Interesting. My 2010 Condor came with Sturmy cranks and they've been great (though I was surprised to see Condor chose to stick them on). I'd rate them as highly as my old Messengers.
I know fuck all about BBs though, sorry.

Are you still looking for one?

I saw these first at a pretty cool bike shop called 'Yeah! Optimism and Urban Life' in Palma, Majorca. They seemed to be doing a roaring trade in them.

I just got this crankset and I have a JIS bottom bracket. It seems that is left about 5mm to be completely introduced (all the way down). Is that normal? Or am I doing something wrong?

Did you have any luck getting a replacement?
Literally only ridden my new build for less than a week and my left arm crank is spoilt - the threading inside just gave way. Luckily I was close to my home, or it's have been really interesting cycling with only my right pedal
Might have the answer. The email from Sunrace didn't help, they just copied and pasted the specs from the website.
But apparently they say to use a Sunrace BBS18 bottom bracket. Which has the following specs:
SunRace BBS18 ROAD BB
Alloy cups and sleeve with square steel axle.
103/113mm for ROAD cranksets
•Square Taper BB (JIS standard)
•Sleeve Material - Alloy
•Cup Material - Alloy
•Sealed Cartridge Bearings
•BB Shell Width: 68mm
•Ave. Weight: 260g (113mm)
So apparently the crankset SHOULD be designed for JIS square taper standard. I guess my Shimano BB might just be a bit long in the spindle. Going to try a 107mm BB and see if I can get the desired chainline.
