  • pics here are amazing. didnt even know this was happening (heads been elsewhere). I miss all the cool stuff. What's more aside from Dropout, I'm not sure I even kno any of the faces.. We'll tis awesome in anycase. Good Efforts.

  • last night was wondering how many pedal revolutions i will have done - just calculated and it is 18,000!

    97,000m on 67GI/5.4metres development

  • Well done you guys. Looks like a bit of an epic! I particalarly like the photo of trackstanding on the travellator - cool! I wanted to do this ride but had been booked out by Mrs Conker, so I was thinking of you last night - thing is, I was thinking how lucky you were with the weather - a bit chilly, but a nice starry sky. How different it seems to be down there south of the river.

  • 99,758m (62miles)
    15,834 pedal revolutions
    6.3 metres development
    78.8 GI
    fucking hills

  • confession time -

tdub, badpoppers, was that you we hooked up with at Clapham? What happend? I doubled back and you had vanished.
yeh we got held at some lights, set off to find you but couldn't even see you ahead. Due to being poorly prepared for 'adverse weather' and already having freezing cold, wet feet we decided it was a bad move and bailed (hangs head in shame). Sorry if we held you up at all...

Given the conditions those of you better prepared faced I think it was the right call!!!

I hope you guys that carried on from Gatwick kept a bit drier and warmer.....I didn't stop shivering until halfway back to London...and yes, that was on the train! (Still enjoyed it?), even though my feet lost all feeling and I was unable to string two words together when we stopped at Gatwick

    ^ouch.

Big respek to all who made it further. :-)

Bring on the summer. (and the expected shaming).

Sorry that we sped off a little, i was trying to check back as much as possible while intermittently on the phone and navigating google maps. We didn't loose much time doubling back, but i did have brief discussion with the police.

As you say, I think it was a wise decision considering the conditions. Hope the experience didn't dampen your spirits :)

  • I don't know about anyone else, but I caught myself a cold :(

I was really up for turning around and going home at Gatwick, it was a miserable ride in the rain and people were really feeling it. I'm glad that people were sensible and called it a night, it got colder and wetter as the night ran on.

So.. Gatwick. I planned to ride around the back entrance and cut through the footpath at Schlumberg house, ride around to the BP and stop in there. Seems that the police were waiting for us at the gate! Luckily with the previous experience, Matt and I knew how to handle the police. We told them how wet and miserable we were and most of us want to get the train back to london. After a few phone calls they let us in and escorted us up to the terminal. Shortly after that, they came in the building and pretty much ordered us to go upstairs and warm up in the terminal!

Dropout, I'm kicking myself that i didn't get your number. I had everyone elses, but as you turned up late i didn't get it. There was a little confusion when you stopped and waited, I didn't know you were stopping. Live and learn from my mistakes on that one, shame we couldn't have hit the bright gay lights of brighton together!

So, roll on the next one. It's a great ride, I know the route off my heart now, apart from the bit between HPC and chelsea bridge!!!

Thanks Felix for being the man in the hat at the back, good work. Sorry I crushed your egg. Was nice to meet some new people, It would have been nicer to talk to you all a bit more but the cold and rain was against us.

    see you all next time

  • I don't know about anyone else, but I caught myself a cold :(

i'm at home gargling a combination of scotch, salt and hot water.

Good work. Which gate were they waiting at? The gate of the North Perimeter Road?

I might have inadvertently caused John to stop as I called him about braker being late. Sorry, Owen, I didn't have your number. I looked for Matt's, too, but it wasn't in the phone numbers thread.

    Well done for leading this!

  • Thanks for your help Oliver. Unfortunately, I missed the start as I had wrongly assumed that 'meet at 10pm' meant depart at some point after that.

Myself and 3 others headed out to Dropout, but only Crimsonape and me made it. I hope that the others turned back due to the weather rather than being dropped.

A huge thank you to Dropout for waiting patiently for us to arrive, and for guiding so expertly.

Also, well done to Crimsonape for soldiering on so valiantly with a crippled knee.

A great ride with some atrocious weather at times. A shame that it wasn't possible to catch up with the pack.

    Slickalicious Happy Bunnies.

I'll tell the tale when I've had some sleep. a few zzz's on the train back is not enough catch-up for 32 hours of wakefulness since Friday morning! Hope CrimsonApes's knee gets better soon, otherwise good news only though from the 'following group'.

Thanks for waiting for me at the top of every hill.
Had a great time. Feel human after 21 hours sleep.

  • good on you chaps.

  • Absolutely gutted I had to bail out, seems like a great ride despite the misery. When back heals I shall be on it like herpes on a hooker.

  • Sounds like fun, but glad my bike's all clean

  • Still on the Beechams!

no matter, just glad you managed to catch some of them! Hoping there is another one of these later in the summer when the weather will be much better, spirits high as ever!

  • +2 ... i dont mind any destination, only under 200k,and not many hills would be appreciated...

  • name the date dude, name the date.

if someone is willing to take charge then I'm happy to suggest dates but you don't want me as navigator!!!!

    1st/2nd weekend in August work???

  • I'm super keen for a repeat - this time I'll get past Gatwick! ;)

  • Did this route on Saturday - recommend. How does it compare to the original route? Devil's Dyke makes for a nice little challenge at the end.

  • How about longest day of the year? 19 June is the closest Saturday, which is pretty damn close.

I've done parts of this route, too, but I'd always recommend the FNRttC route. I think it's by far the best. The way of getting out of London is unbeatable, I think.

  • How about longest day of the year? 19 June is the closest Saturday, which is pretty damn close.

I'll organise a summer Brighton overnighter, but it won't be on that date. Do go ahead if you want to organise a day ride. I think what with 45 people on last year's June overnighter that interest in a day ride could be massive and up to or more than a hundred people (which wouldn't be that easy to manage).

Well done, John! Look forward to the report!

Well this is way too late, but for the record, Braker, Crimson Ape and myself all made it to Brighton about 2 hours after the 'magnificent seven', without having had any interaction with them and by which time they were on the train home.
The reasons we weren't with the main group were firstly that I hadn't made it to the start of the ride at HP corner, where I'd intended to get phone no.s, as I've done previously and has proven invaluable. The ride was at Chelsea Bridge when I joined it -with the rain just beginning. Then I picked up Oliver's voicemail saying Braker might call me, wanting to catch-up. I got a gasping message to the front that I'd stop at Beddington whilst the group went on. Then ensued over an hour of waiting in the rain whilst I took calls from Braker in which I mostly failed to hear anything he said, because of the appalling wet-road traffic roar. I also managed to mis-direct him into the industrial estate to the East of Hackbridge. Incredibly he found me. Crimson Ape was with him too and re-enthused, the ride was on again!
We didn't get there quickly, but we had a small adventure, which I really enjoyed, not least for the chance to perve Braker's remarkable bespoke ti frame and the others' uncomplaining tolerance of my mindless babbling and my own amazement at (mostly)remembering the route. Crimson Ape was faultlessly stoic about his increasingly painful knee. It was a walk-up Ditchling for him, but Braker and I beat the Beacon. After food at Izzy's the three of us got a wily group-save for four back to London. and a'spotted' from Teenslain at Victoria.
I did an errand or two and got home around 3.00, feet still wet!

    Yes, I'm up for another.
