I have just commuted home on 62gi fixed (on the dave quinn with the track bikes wheels and old crankset), and find myself taking 12 minutes more, but it's not infuriatingly slow by any means. I think what Louis said was right, spinny gears are not as bad as you make out in your head, not in London, anyway.

Get gears! 24" bottom end 75" top end. No flip-flop faffage.

It's very difficult to get smaller than 13t freewheel before you get into exotic freehub modifications. There's a Halo freehub-end that is 10t, looks like it'd wear out in about a week, mind.

Larger polo is definitely the bigger evil, and as someone who has been commuting on around 43 GI for about a year, its only just now starting to grate (must finish other bike!)

I believe you can get down 7 tooth freewheel on bmx hubs, you can also get 48h hubs for pretty cheap, I think there's a link in the eBay thread to some for £20?

If not bmx threading I think the smallest freewheel is going to be 14 (maybe 13, defo not 12!)

I have a 12t on my track bike, bought it at a jumble. Never seen one before or since.

Cog not freewheel right? You can fit a cog on a normal hub (and even then you should use a resessed lockring as most lockrings are bigger than the dips in a 12t). I doubt very much you could fit bearings between the threads and a 12t freewheel.

I've got a new one from jejames, but it was there last... They said they are getting more and will mail me when they do (there's a couple of 12t cog threads in classifieds with links to a couple of other places to try if you want)...

You can get bmx cassette hubs which go down to 8t on the driver, there not freewheels that screw on in the same way though. Then there are two different sizes of actual freewheel thread on bmx hubs. The smaller which could run 12t (DK did make a 12t freewheel but they were renowned for being shit, 13t are pretty hit and miss too but acs fats and odyssey's were the best of the bunch) to 15t freewheels. The larger freewheel thread was for 16t+ freewheels.

Odyssey remover is the same as a standard four prong freewheel remover*. But I'd go with the acs fat anyway as I always had better luck with them.

*Edit: doubting myself now as I remember borrowing a friends to remove my odyssey, but can't remember whether that was because mine didn't fit or I just couldn't find mine.

Edit #2: Checked there not the same size. Need a different tool for the odyssey and the acs.

Going down to 33/22 next week... 43GI is still too high for me...

Is this still up to date? so most people are around the 40" mark?

my advice would be, don't look at at the chart to see what everyone else is doing, think about your game and decide whether you need to be more spinny or less or whatever.

Sure, but I need a reference point to work from, I know I'm too high at the moment.

I reposted this chart in Brum, to try to encourage some of the newer players to drop their gears. They're all making the same mistake I made, trying to make their bike road-practical.

Around 40" is pretty much bang on in my opinion. We have the biggest court I've played on in brum and it's still not too low. If I was playing Downham, I'd go a bit lower. 1" either way is not really noticeable.

However, it depends if you're a masher or spinner in real life. Muddy/XC 90s mountain biking made me a spinner. If you're new to cycling or commute on a high fixed gear, you may be more of a masher.
