spotted this today in south london
Yes but the complicated double locking set up will confuse the thieves.

The thief is clearly an idiot too, they could have stolen the bike with out taking the seat post out, or if that was a pain at least taken the seat as well afterwards so they can make a speedy get away on the bike.

Just seen some one leave there bike where some one else always leaves a chain locked up, they hooked it over the crank to look like it was locked up

There's a crappy BSO locked up to a tree near my office (Uni campus), locked with a meaty cable lock through the frame only. What's more fail though is that someone has clearly tried to nick the front wheel, but hasn't been able to figure out how to get the wheel out of the forks/past the V-brakes. It's sitting there with the front wheel out of the fork but still attached, and has been for several days now.

I managed to spot one of the two 'how not to lock your bike' bikes that are around work today with its owner. She was really grateful when I suggested that she change how she locked her bike, and explained why, and told her that there was a secure bike parking area the she could access, and that work has a bike user group, that might be helpful to her. She's been cycling for 20 years, and noone had ever explained how to lock your bike to her. I saw her this morning, cycling in with a D lock instead of the chain she had been using. I was really pleased (although I've not seen how she's using it yet...).

She's bought some pepper spray too now

Why would anyone want to lock their bike to her?

Wow^ that's really stupid.
Saw this on Wednesday, off Hatton Wall. I can't really work out how this happened. I feel bad for laughing at this, but it was breathtaking to find. From the look of the components, I'd guess the rider is on here sometimes.

How, in the name of all things holy, do you lock your wheels and not your frame?
-
• #1815
Only thing I can imagine is: drunk... front wheel off as usual, loop to rear and frame... frame loop fail - ergo, bike gone.
-
• #1816
or, they just bought the wheels, and didn't want to lug them round all day so left them chained up.
-
• #1817
Yeah I thought that, but you wouldn't leave a pair of wheels you valued all vulnerable and stamp inviting like that would you?
-
• #1818
They could have been knocked over?
It's a mystery!

• #1819
Glad you're all as flummoxed as I was! I thought I was going mad.
Maybe, they removed one wheel from the bike, and locked through both, cos they'd seen other people doing that (the rear wheel appears to have some kind of skewer). Only they failed to lock thru the frame...
or something.

These are locked up all over London.
I hate changing flats – I prefer a fast wheel swap and a quick getaway.

Free lock outside Kingsland Shopping Centre a few weeks ago.
It was gone by the time I'd got my shopping - hope you were lucky! Saw someone have their wheels swiped from there the previous week. I would have put a lock on it but after previous experiences I've learnt it's best not to do someone a favour regarding bike locking.

Whats the fine for losing a boris bike?
Maybe we're missing a trick, is sheilding your bike using a Boris bike the ultimate deterrent?
Maybe not ultimate, but you can't always grab a special forces unit to protect your ride as quickly as you could a Boris ride!
more importantly, no foot retention, and SNOW!!!!
