there is an incredible photo in the currrent exhib at Tate - Another London - of the view over the city, I think from St Paul's but I can't quite remember, showing the extent of bomb damage after WWII.
I agree, there is too much glass, but there's definitely not fuck all else. standing on Walbrook (the street) with the ugly new bulbous Walbrook building on one side, excavation site on the other, No. 1 Poultry ahead (modern, yes, but not a cliche of glass and steel), Wren's St Stephen Walbrook just in front and a funny little Queen Anne style house next to that, is a cool kinda collage of a city.
A ghetto of suits? well, maybe. they do love a bit of ye olde building too - the Queen Anne style house is home to the Walbrook Club.

Good point about the bombing.
I just think there's a but of a monoculture drowning everything else out. There are some truly awful buildings in the city, and many of these are less than 20 years old.

btw 1 Poultry is on my hit list! Terrible.

Postmodern architecture is wank.

And anyone who uses a phrase like that is a wanker.

But postmodern architecture is still wank.

Big Terence saw fit to plonk a showy restaurant atop 1 Poultry, which pretty much condemned it. Regardless of that, the City is probably my favourite part of town to wade about in.

found this, similar if not the same one I was thinking of - grabbed from the east london advertiser which gives it no attribution other than "taken in 1942 from St Pauls"

the other day I was sheltering (alongside numerous suits) in No.1 Poultry as the rain came pouring in, it's quite strange to see it raining inside, going past you and down into the basement.

Old
Lovely little enclave - Oxford Court off Salt Hall Court.
The Building you're looking through is the Walbrook Building which, of course, sits on top of the Walbrook River, and I think the reference to 'bullish gods' is to traders as the original Stock Market was on the site of wht is now Guildhall - also atop the Walbrook.New
Clue?

As the last had connections to water, this has connections to waterfowl.
Let me quantify that a bit - some of the occupants of this building are well connected to a particular type of waterfowl. -

Nice. Aero bars any good in this wind?
-
• #9048
Good in a headwind.
Not so great in gusting random sidewinds blowing the Spinergy all over the place. Also good for scaring city workers crossing the road without looking as (when riding on the base bars) it looks like you're going to impale them with the aerobars.

Are you bloody serious? That's a TREK.
I personally think the relative lack of ancient and all the faceless modern phallic buildings of the old City could eventually be seen as a sad 'development'. Too much glass, too many big financial firms and fuck all else, too much ugly megalith. A ghetto of suits.
