Someone get the tag, I don't wanna be the one to break BTOB. It's in London, and inside the north circ, was hoping to have been a couple of tags further on by now so that I could get back in the game!

Old:
the first v2 landing site in London, Staveley Road, Chiswick. They travelled at 3000 miles and hour and apparently the noise of the approaching rocket was often only heard after its impact. Now, from the incredibly fast to the very slow - up to you to interpret that as the tree's growth or the service
that's one way to spend the first day of redundancy!

the first v2 landing site in London, Staverley Road, Chiswick. They travelled at 3000 miles and hour and apparently the noise of the approaching rocket was often only heard after its impact.
The first one was hushed up for about 6 months initially because the government was unsure what had happened, then when it became apparent to try and stop mass panic from breaking out at the prospect of a second blitz.
1400 V2s were launched at the UK and approximately 500 hit London here is a website with more info and a map that shows some of the bomb-sites. The V2 blitz only stopped after operation market garden when the launch sites in the Netherlands were overrun. Bizarrely enough I used to live 500 metres away from where this rocket was launched in 1944 and now live very near to this site. I only found this out recently.
If the V2 had never had been used in anger the space race would never have happened as the key people in both the US and Soviet space programs were Nazi scientists that were offered immunity from prosecution after the war if they went and worked for these two governments. So in effect this little street in suburban Chiswick is the sight of the beginning of mankind's journey into space.
that's one way to spend the first day of redundancy!
Best of luck finding a new job.

Oh. I thought it was a War of the Worlds reference.

^^It was fascinating reading about the V2, and also, from an architectural perspective, correlating the bomb sites with the bands of 60's buildings/carparks built in their place. I'm not sure that Londonist link is working but here's one to the V2 map itself:

Oh. I thought it was a War of the Worlds reference.
me too.
this game is great for learning about London history! -
• #5649
yah, it wasn't a pre-tag originally though. It began life as a legit post-tag, but OLC beat me to the post, so I saved it for a couple of weeks...

Noooooooooooooooooooo
goddamit. Meh ... my other tag was at least in the dark too.
London does indeed predate the M25. I see no mention of it in the magna carta
