  • ha! this thread is ace, I've become properly sucked in, as a result I:

have been inspired to travel round with my camera now as my phone camera is so shite it only takes pics on a par with vision after 10 cans of kestrel super.

am now on the look out for interesting bike photo opportunities and am meandering up and down roads I never would normally.

am loving the tension of wondering if I can can get back to basecamp to upload (as I don't the tech to do it on the hoof) before someone beats you to it, it's like a Dirty Harry style 'do you feel lucky punk' challenge? Sod the scenic route, game on!

am loving the posts like Blue Quinns that give a bit of background history to the locations.

am looking forward to some harder ones and people giving out clues, the scope seems endless in this game, you could have like Skully mentioned word association or cryptic clues or whatever or you can keep it simple, so something for everyone.

am loving that in Londons famous London this game could go on for years.

    good work forum, whoop whoop

insert obligatory isn't it about time you got a bloody life comment

  • damn! just got back from Cooper's Row!

Oh well, lovely day for a trip out.

  • Sorry dude. I thought that might happen to me, but got lucky. Got us both out the house anyway.

  • Beautiful photo Fox, I daren't go look for it tho, every time I go into that place I worry I may never find my way out. I swear it exists within a space/time distortion.

  • Here you go Pete. Tucked away in the Barbican. Apologies - I'll update with more details after some cheeky laps.

  • wow, good work everyone. Bit easy that one Tom?

  • Easy is good I reckon. I was tempted to throw in a curveball but thought I'd put in an accessible one since it's the weekend and people have time to play...plus I love a good wall, and that wall is good.

  • Those railings are a dead giveaway ;)

Thanks middleofnowhere. It's actually tucked away in the Golden Lane estate, next door to the Barbican (but in the words of The Rakes, "There's nothing golden about Golden Lane...".

The debut work of Chamberlin, Powell and Bon who did the Barbican centre (architecture lecturers at Kingston School of Art who all entered the competition held in 1951 to design Golden Lane, agreeing that if any of them won they would share the commission - Powell won) but geographically and stylistically separate.

I thought it would be too hard without the Barbican towers in the background, but maybe with hindsight it was too easy for a bunch of mid-century architecture nuts...

  • zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz 'nerd fanny architecture waving'

  • Those tags are funny. There's nothing nerd fanny architecture waving about The Rakes though.

    Oh wait...

  • I got a nice back-up location on my way home too, for next time :)

  • plus bonus points will be awarded for the number of giraffes in the matching shot

  • The butterfly is a Cambridge Beauty on the side of the old public wash house on Wells Way wot runs through Burgess Park.

In a way it's a shame Joe.S didn't get that one as the building has a Colnago logo on the side (sort of):
    http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=burgess+park&aq=&sll=51.443228,-0.085316&sspn=0.01942,0.0424&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Burgess+Park,+Picton+St,+London+SE5+7QH,+United+Kingdom&ll=51.482292,-0.085766&spn=0.009701,0.0212&z=16&layer=c&cbll=51.482392,-0.085785&panoid=WQMTq964EH1FJ3I4wJFJJA&cbp=12,64.75,,0,-2.74

Cambridge would have been nice but it's actually the Camberwell Beauty or Nymphalis antiopa, a large, rare, migrant butterfly. The name is underneath, hence the slightly awkward first photo. So named as two were found on Coldharbour Lane - formerly Camberwell Lane.

The mural is also familiar to fans of late-80's/early-90's indie as the cover of the second untitled album by the House of Love, often referred to as the Fontana or Butterfly album.

Actually, I feel like I should have gone a bit further afield for the follow-up photo, but it was top of my list and my brain wasn't functioning properly to think of another one...

  • I get no bonus points as the Giraffes have all gone to bed.

Time to cut out the easy ones.......

  • Massive photo fail!

  • Cambridge would have been nice but it's actually the Camberwell Beauty

Ha, I think I wrote Cambridge because I was thinking that you were from Cambridge!

  • i know exactly where that is.

  • I get no bonus points as the Giraffes have all gone to bed.

Was hoping someone would wait til daylight again to snap away. Ah well. You're being sneaky with the not-on-google-streetview-ness.
(also, tried so hard to hand it over to a norths contigent, but...)

  • mustardbreak - have you been itching to have another go after being thwarted this morning? Impressive commitment to the game to bookend your day with photo larks!

  • I finished work it was still light (for about ten minutes) so I thought I would get a few miles in. I had intended to go for a ride this morning before work but stayed in bed so it was a win win. I only live two minutes from Rotherhithe tunnel so it didn't take me out of my way.

6pt I was going to take it further north tonight but got lazy and turned home.

I have a day off work tomorrow so who knows!

  • haha, I think, like the mid-20th century architectural icons, that new one might well be recognisable to a high proportion of people on here...
not back in london for a few days, have fun y'all.

  • I'm planning to be up in Cam mid week next week, weather depending. If I time my tagging right there might be a bit of crossover...
heads on over to cam thread to have a look see

  • yay! yes do it! no-one's picked up on mine. thought it was quite easy for locals, but it won't be that obvious for visitors... how well do you know cambridge? it's pretty central, anyway.

  • Massive photo fail!

    Tiny photo fail, more like.

  • Irrespective of the size of the thing, I have no idea where that is.
