• Must be a different church.

• Old: deconsecrated graveyard of St John's (previously St Augustine's), Hackney. The one in the background is some other church.

New: The birthplace of seeing a man about a dog, this empty space used to be a hostelry, airbourne missiles didn't knock it down though.

•
It's not a re-tag, I think. This one is close to home for Ben, if I'm not mistaken.
There's your clue. If necessary I'll think of a clue to the saint, but can't think of one that isn't blatantly a pointer to it's situation, taggers.
Actually, I thought the main clue I gave was this one ...

Oh, and it's easy if you have a way of narrowing down the options.

... since I daresay not everyone knows where you live.

awaits Oliver's next post with interest

Why? Did you expect me to have the tag in my next post?

• Old: deconsecrated graveyard of St John's (previously St Augustine's), Hackney. The one in the background is some other church.

Well done, Ben. The one in the background is, of course, the very same St John at Hackney. Of St Augustine's, only the tower remains.

• Stupid, stupid game

• New:

Hmm ... looks as if you went for the wrong wall, too, Will.

• Tagzumping is alive and well.

• I couldn't decide whether to bother to find the exact bit of wall Photoben took, but I'm nothing if not very throrough (as the actor said to the bishopess).

Sorry wiganwill. You'd probably know the new one, as would many, if you get the clue sorted...

I'm happy to augment the clue if anybody wants...

• Well done, Ben. The one in the background is, of course, the very same St John at Hackney. Of St Augustine's, only the tower remains.

Aha, I see, thanks - so the newer church is St John's, what remains of the medieval bit marks where St Augustine's was...

• first clue is good enough, sadly i can't go tagging any time soon.

• For new tag I got as far as a playwrite with a French name. Born in Ireland.
Dead end.

• found it!

• Cool...

• There's your clue. If necessary I'll think of a clue to the saint, but can't think of one that isn't blatantly a pointer to it's situation, taggers.

But any persistent tagger is sure to get this one.

That was your clue. Well done skully. Also I live 100m from there [/LAZY]. If I was in today the kettle would have been on. Next time...

Oliver, just wondering if you would have joined in some acrostic wordplay.

• Hmmm. Trapped on a fashion shoot, ten minutes away from the new tag. With no bike.

• girls? stay

• Oliver, just wondering if you would have joined in some acrostic wordplay.
I don't do cryptic crosswords, so I'm actually not very aware of that. But despite St John at Hackney being dedicated to St John, too, I don't think 'baptist' is such a great clue, as nearby St John the Baptist is a completely different church:

• oops, I think Mr Schick may have a valid objection, although the St John he's linked is an RC place.

There's a C of E church dedicated to St John the Baptist at Hoxton but I suspect the Hackney one may be a different St John. It's presumably linked to the Knights Templar (as in St John's Ambulance, St John of Jerusalem etc).

What difference does that make?

I checked that, but its own web-site notes that it was dedicated to St John the Baptist:

Oh, and there's also St John of Jerusalem, in Victoria Park:

• What difference does that make?

Only that the naming of an RC Church as St John the Baptist does not prevent the nearby C of E church being dedicated to the same saint. No more than that.

Blue Quinn's going to flip when he sees all this church chat cluttering up this thread.

Is there any rule against several same-denomination churches in close proximity to each other being dedicated to the same saint? If so, I'd never heard of it.

• I have no idea if there's a rule against it but it would be odd, no? A bit like having the same road name appearing more than once in a small area.

• Rose and Crown.

• Royal Oak
