Material Ref?

We barely do anything though... I try to keep my equipment in check and I guess have faith that others will do the same.

I have seen some proper dodgy mallets, but generally go with a "nothing's happened yet, ah well" kind of approach, which is stupid/lame.

I think you underestimate how often we handle and examine each others bikes and mallets... Every time the mallets get thrown in they are picked up by someone for the shuffle... And in many other cases besides... Build a dodgy mallet and see how long it is before someone notices it? I'd bet it doesn't make it into it's first game before someone notices.

The nothings happened yet approach is the most logical. Untill there's a problem who's to say what should a shouldn't be legal?

whether this is a contact or impact sport is by the by, you are a lot less likely to get an injury from being run over by me, Than from a mallet or even a ball to the face.

In fact the worst injury I've heard about has been dans hand, which from what I heard was caused by an unlucky slip on a grate... Has anything been done about this grate? That is more worrying/shameful, when something has gone wrong and noones thought to fix it?!

True. The euros also enforced the helmet rules. I remember bill chasing someone in a flying helmet off court on the first day. There may have been several other tourneys that havent quite matched those epic organisational standards though..

James Fucking Brown played fixed brakeless on a road ratio forever and was in more control than most.

Are we using JFB as a role model again? You know how badly that could turn out? Remember dublin at the euros? Practically 1:1 ratios, and still caused more crashes than everyone else combined. Unless you count the awesome Barcelona vs Barcelona game on day 2. At one point all 6 of them were tapping out..

Its not so much the ratio/brakeless as the skill level of the rider. I think we underestimate how much bike control it takes to play this game sometimes.

I'm going to blame Ali... he gave me his old shoes which I promptly made a hole in the bottom with pedals pegs. The hole got bigger and I had an uncontrolled fall at Downham that meant my foot twisted funny coming out of the strap, my toe poked out of the hole in the shoe and the nail was promptly removed by the polo court. I also head-butted the wall a little bit... I didn't realise the nail was fucked until my toes got squelchy during the game.

Moral of the story? Don't use old shoes for polo.
