How do people feel about sharing book files? -
• #756
I'm fine with the whole concept. I've always lent books I've owned, and libraries have always existed. Why wouldn't you want to share books? Mankind needs more readers.
Only in the last 100 years have authors primarily made money from publishers through direct sales to consumers. Prior to that authors were either sufficiently wealthy to be able to afford to write, or wrote anyway and then relied upon commission to pay them.
In these days with people not needing to work on the farm for 16 hours a day, we have more time than ever to write if we wanted, and technology allows for crowd-sourced commissions.
My view is very strongly that I couldn't give a hoot for the publishing industry, and that as many people who want to read books should be able to. Everything that people could do to remove barriers to people reading and give them more to read is a good thing, and I believe the economic and technological setup allows for the authors to be paid more than ever (with the exception of people like JK Rowling) whilst having more reach than ever.
Bring on book sharing in all forms, legal or illegal.
However... I really hope that the shared book retains high quality content structure and layout (ToC, index, search, diagrams and images as applicable, and any specific typesetting required). Basically, that the shared format isn't a TXT file.

I don't think it will ever go straight to .txt because the Production work will already have been done. If anything, more interactivity will be introduced.
It will be a sad day if/when books go straight to device rather than printed first.I'm bemused by the fact that you couldn't give a hoot about Publishing. Unless you mean the conglomerate fiction / celeb bio Publishers?
Imagine a world with Publishers?
I should point out that this is my profession so I would be bias.A lot of people are anti-kindle and I suppose I should be worried about the advent of the electronic reader in this age-old profession that I'm passionate about. But e-readers encourage reading and that can only be a good thing.
I bought a book on Quantum Physics which I probably wouldn't have otherwise.
If anyone wants a copy... -

Publishing is approaching a near-zero cost, publishers whose only contribution to the world is to be a middleman and take a slice are likely to be disintermediated from the equation. Publishers who can offer something new and original, who help to develop writers, who bring together people who otherwise wouldn't create such art, who act as collators and publicists for great writers deserve to survive... but, not one of those virtues requires the person or company who performs that role to be... a publisher.
The biggest role the majority of publishers perform is the bankrolling of the writer. But costs are low enough for the writer to now do without this. If musicians can do it whilst funding their own equipment and home studios, then writers who need only a laptop and good editing software can certainly do it.
I no longer see a future for publishing as it has existed (and dominated) for the past 100 years. If there is a future, then they will need to downscale their operations (as they will lose distribution and the control of that which gives them their vital and profitable middleman position) and then discover what value they really offer the writer and readers. Right now, they haven't woken up to the fact that the writer needs them far less, and their price fixing behaviour (look at the anti-trust investigation about the agency model and Apple) is quickly making readers believe they aren't thinking of them. If they carry on like that, I will change my tune from "likely to be disintermediated" to "deserve to be disintermediated".
So far, they hasten their own demise. The internet is here and software will eat everything.

I'm still not clear on what sector in publishing you mean, but I'm afraid none of that rings true with any of the publishers I have ever worked for. That's a very broad summarisation and I still think you don't mean academic publishers e.g.
I'm sad to think that a publishing house might be perceived as only a "bankroll for the writers". Creating a books involves much much more and requires a phenomenal amount of knowledge and skill in many departments.
Obviously it's an antiquated medium and technologies will always advance, inciting the downfall of many traditional roles, but you will still need the skill-set of the individuals in publishing house to produce anything worth their salt. You can't just negate hundreds of years of tradition and knowledge and expect it to be any good.
Yes you can create your own book, believe me I've have many people think they can design their own book cover, but it will be on par with someone who produces their own CD/mp3 from their garage. -

thread dredge.
g/f got those small Kindle, but would like to buy her a much better Kindle cover for it, I have this which is beautifully simple and kept the size down without being bulky like most of the cases out there, but they don't make one for the newer smaller Kindle.
Any good suggestion for a smart looking cover?
