  • Thanks for that but they look like links direct to the site although TBH I have no idea how this click-through stuff works

  • If you use that link the interwebz knows that you got there from LFGSS and it spays some monies. Ask no questions!!

  • I want to get my mum a kindle for her birthday. As I see it there are 2 basic options;

    A) The little one

    ;or

    B) The big one

We were looking at them in a shop, and she didn’t seem to like the fact that the smaller one doesn’t have a useable keyboard. Also I think she wanted one with 3G.

I would have thought that you’d buy most of your books on your PC (making the keyboard redundant) and that to upload them you’d usually be in wi-fi range (making 3G redundant)?

What do people with the larger 3G model think? If you were buying one again which would you choose and why?

Also are there any others I'm missing? (I'd rather not buy anything Sony).

    Cheers.

  • For "older folk" the killer advantage of the 3G one is that it just works.

The WiFi one requires that a WEP/WPA password is input, which sometimes proves beyond the patience of the user (in my experience) who then does not use the Kindle as "it just doesn't work".

    Also agree with this.

My Kindle finds it difficult to pick up wifi in our house as there are so many networks floating about. Also like the convenience of getting new books when not at home.

  • Cheers. That's exactly the type of feedback I was after.

I find often 'features' just never get use, but then sometimes you do change your user habits because they're there. Also my mum's a very methodical person so fairly good with this stuff, but equally I want it to be less hassle.

The main attraction of the little one, is that it's little. But I realise sometimes smaller things aren't necessarily easier to hold/handle. Also when I was looking at them, the difference in size didn't seem that noticeable.

Checking out this "which e-reader" thing, it brought up a Kindle DX with a 9.7-inch screen. But I'm struggling to find it being sold.

Part of me just thinks get her the one with all the toys.

  • I'll be getting the 3G for Mrs Brave Xmas.

  • I like the keyboard one for a different reason: I can read it in bed. When lying on my back, with the kindle on my chest, the thickness of the duvet means that the keyboard is covered up, and the bottom of the screen is visible. If the keyboard and bezel wasn't there, the bottom inch or so would be covered.

  • DX is america only AFAIK.

Had the same experience with my older uncle.

He's just got his first Kindle. He had a play with the smaller one and the keyboard one. He preferred the keyboard one as there's more to hold onto.

  • OK, so it's decided the bigger 3g one.

    Cheers for the pointers.

  • When I was on holiday for the last 2 weeks I felt for the first time I could have benefited from the 3G kindle. As I turned out I had to walk to the reception to pick up the free wifi. Bloody love my kindle though :) and I'll be buying one for my sister at Christmas.

  • Monday: Sit on Kindle like an oaf, break Screen.
Tuesday: Phone Amazon to tell them.
Friday: Brand new replacement kindle arrives free of charge.

    Now thats service......

  • Yep, I had the same thing. Brilliant.

  • Did you have to send them proof? Sounds really good of them though!

  • Had to send back the broken one by courier delivery/collect.

  • Did they reload your library or did you have to recover that somehow off the internet?

  • I just re-downloaded what I wanted back on the device. It's all in Archived Items (apart from stuff I transferred on myself, like documents and free books)

  • Ah well, still nice of them!

  • I have asked Father Christmas to leave a Kindle under the tree for me this year. I'd like to buy myself a nice case to go with it. I'm not mad on the lighted one that quite a few people seem to have. Any suggestions?

  • I bought a case. The case caused the Kindle to crash repeatedly. I stopped using the case. It no longer crashes and I am a happy person.

  • My case does not cause crashes.

  • I'm leaning towards this:

Nice and smart, and made in the UK so supporting a small UK business.

  • I have the lighted one. Not mad on the look of it and it was pricey. But, I use the light all the time. Wouldn't be without it now.
