  • Bump! I'm sitting in a cafe with my laptop trying to read a couple of journal articles and keep finding other things to distract myself with on my computer. I want an e-book reader! DK, you still use yours? Did you install the PDF update?

Anyone have one I can borrow?

I just got the new kindle 3 (3g version) its really impressive as a pure reading device - I am however using it to read novels rather than PDF.

I work near Goodge Street station, but not in London in the evenings - more than happy to meet up at lunch for you to have a play....

    New kindle is awesome

  • What's so good about it? Why would I pay £150 and stop taking a book on the train?

I have a reader on my phone (Aldiko and Kindle) and use that when I forget a book, ie. today when I slept in a caught the Tube but I don't quite get the whole specific book reader device thing. Long holiday maybe but then you risk losing £150 versus £6

    Indeed it is!

And can be made even more brilliant by using Calibre with it to deliver newspapers and magazines direct to the kindle.

The ability to email word docs and pdfs to the kindle and have them automatically converted is a real bonus for work stuff, and beats printing out huge docs and killing trees.

Have also been pleasantly surprised by the web browser on it, happily read and post on the forum on it, and using the article mode to strip out ads and pictures is a really neat solution.

  • I have just ordered one, it will be arriving next week.

    I am excite.

Mark, you are welcome to have a play with it- I'll give you a shout when it arrives and we could meet at LMNH?

  • I only want it to read PDF's so if you've just upgraded, and want rid of the old one let me know. I'm really rather jealous Dammit. Kindle's are bloody brilliant

Ha, I also just bought one. Talking with DK convinced me. Was going to go for the non-3G one, but one reason I really want one is for trips to the continent. Having free internet (even if crippled) is a pretty big selling point in the end.

Unfortunately, the delivery date is estimated for, more or less, right when I'm leaving for my next trip. Really hoping it arrives in time!

  • I thought about the 3G issue a lot, and eventually decided to go get it for the exact same reasons as you.

When we were in Italy earlier this year I did not dare turn data access on with regards to my phone.

Having grey-scale Internet for (kind of) free ie better than nothing!

I bought a couple.of books last night, have Kindle software on my Android handset.

It synchronises across whatever kindle devices you have.registered to you, so when my Kindle turns up it should be on the tight page!

  • I haven't even looked at what's available electronically. Maybe this is what will finally let me read some fiction again. Haven't read anything in about two years... Last book was David Lodge's Small World. Just feel too guilty reading fiction for pleasure when I got other shits that must be read.

    I'm excited!

  • I actually spotted my first one on the Tube last night. Freaky screen.

  • Join us Hippy.

  • I like my paperbacks.

  • Have you considered the iPad?

  • As a drinks tray, yeah, I think it'd be quite novel (pun intended).

  • I like my paperbacks.

I like my paperbacks, too, and I like my hardbacks even better.

  • This is a small section of two of my shelves- I have four and they are all full, with stacks of books on tables, by the bed, on more shelves in the sitting room etc:

The Kindle can fit something like 4,000 books on it.

That's a lot of virtual shelf that I don't have to build.

  • Also I re-read my paperbacks time and again, I have some that are held together with an elastic band now as the pages are adrift of the spine.

  • I love full bookcases. I have five. I simply wouldn't swap them for an e-book reader. I already have far too much data on my computer. It's much better to be able to see and touch what you have than to try to minimise everything and end up having far too much.

And sometimes books fall apart, and then new ones have to be printed. Good.

  • I don't think I've ever re-read a book. I have plenty of room here for books and don't buy that many anyway. Most of mine are boxed up in Oz anyway. I don't like the idea of flinging about £150 worth of electronics when I could have a £10 paperback in my bag.

  • You could slant that the other way though- sling that £150 worth of electronics into your bag for a holiday instead of 10kg of paperbacks, a laptop and your Smartphone...

  • I would always be taking the phone though and it has Kindle on it. I only took a laptop to Oz because I was away for ages and might be called upon for emergency work.
I have other stuff to do on holidays, reading is only happening on the plane. For a trip to Oz it might be worth it but how long does the battery last?

    Seems pretty good.

I performed this test yesterday as it happened- reading Quantum Thief on my Nexus One/Kindle.

Train journey to Canterbury- Nexus One from full, off charge at 07.15 was totally dead by 12.45.

The Kindle's battery is meant to be rather better than half a day.

  • It's also pretty bleak reading that much text on a mobile screen. When you read a lot, eye comfort is important.

  • These devices will never replace books - they have their uses for whn travelling, but they cant replace the experience of actually reading a book.
