  • Has anyone here got and hacked a kindle fire? Does it turn it into a regular tablet?

The price seems good but from what I've read it looks to be too limited to use as a regular tablet.
It's possible to root the Fire HD, but you're still stuck with an Amazon version of Android. There doesn't appear to be any Fire HD specific ROM available.

    Don't buy one. Get a Nexus 7.

  • i got the paperwhite after i lost my old kindle. I'd say go get the new one, it feels much better in your hands and the built in light feature works great in sunshine too so you don't have to keep adjusting the brightness.

So I'm midway through rooting my Fire HD again - I'm flashing it with the Kinology ROM.

Once I have a fastboot cable (so that I can transfer files while it's booted into recovery mode), I'll know if the hardware is any good once it's free of the Amazon yoke.

  • The screen is amazing on the Fire and very well build, just a shame the OS is crap.

  • So, I seem to have broken my 3G keyboard.
Apparently standing on it does it no good.
    I now need a replacement.
Are any of the alternatives worth considering?
I dont need keyboard or 3g in all honesty.
I quite the idea of the backlit ones.
    Nook, Kobo or Amazon?

    Cheers.

  • @ParryMan - I upgraded from a regular Kindle to a Paperwhite and find it so much better to read.

  • ^ this...

I had a 3G w/ keyboard and switched to a paperwhite. Much, much nicer to read with.

  • ^ me three, paperwhite loads more betterer

  • fourth this.

The backlit is one of those thing that you never realised how useful it is till you tried it.

  • Cheers, amazon just emailed me, £75 for a refurb PW.
High probability ParryWife will commandeer it though.

  • Really?!

    £75 now that is tempting.

  • If you go on their support chat function, and have a registered kindle, they seem to offer discounts of refurb units.

  • Why is it so much better? I thought the whole point was that there wasn't a light

  • The paperwhite is the one.

  • yeah, my wife has a Touch, but wishes she got a PW.

Was looking at the Nook Glow, but it has some terrible reviews, and for the sake of £6 i would rather the Kindle.

  • The original Touch were a bit crap, as you can easily see the pixels which start to really bug me the more I read it.

I tried really hard to convince myself to get the Nook. But the kindle is just a better device.

  • ordered the paperwhite.
they want my b0rked one in return though, which is full of neferiously obtained books :s and was jailbroken.
i doubt they will give a monkeys

  • I really might need to hack my kindle now.

That's awesome, weather + tasks etc.. as the screen saver

  • Ha that's awesome.

Been using this for a good couple of years. Sheer brilliance if you don't have the patience to read at your computer. Used daily.

  • Amazon just announced new Paperwhite ... really tempted to order it. Atm I just have the cheapest kindle. Thing is, I can't think of any real reason other than I want one. My kindle works fine. #1stworldproblems

  • The resolution is better, and the light really helps.

I guess if you never try one, you'll be happy as you are. But once you've used the better screen, it'd be difficult to go back. Theres no real difference in functionality in day to day use. Unless yours doesnt have a touch screen. I find that essential these days. Constantly want to poke my fingers at my laptop screen.
