+1 for the owner of the ratty Gios :-) I left a note on the saddle asking if he would sell it to me to restore, but he e-mailed me and said as beat up as it is, he still loves the bike and wants to keep it.
That is indeed cool.. My assumption was wrong and I have to hand it to nefarious.. ;)

One of the other messengers bikes in Manchester. Original rat bike.

this place is for beaters to remember
well yeah
i just mean if you cover a new bike in stickers it doesn't make it a rat/beater
-
• #632
if the owner uses it as his beater, its a beater
i love worn saddles....

"The owner has disabled downloading of their photos" < so fecking annoying, any one know how to get around that?

Right click and select View Page Source, then scroll through the mess until you see the image location. Should look like this http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4095/4881078863_63e170f220_b.jpg

just says "Page not found" on that link
maybe I just don't have that option
-
• #637
The link isn't actually a link. When you select View Page Source you get shown a load of coding, and you're looking for something in that format. In the line before it will mention image height and width which is quite a good way of telling if you've picked the right line of code.

if the owner uses it as his beater, its a beater
i'm still gonna disagee, not trying to argue, but if i went out an bought a brand new £800 otp and said, its 'my beater' then its a beater?
i'm just of the thought that putting stickers on it doesn't make it a beater, a beater should look beaten. not looked after.
-
• #640
This doesn't look very looked after...
I still look after my beater though, if i had the money i would spend a lot on it to
Edit: what i mean is, a beater is different to different owners
I'm sure some people, like messengers spend over 1000 on it but its still used as a beater, but to others its a £10 bike from the junk yard that works like shit

i quite like those all city dropouts
-
• #642
I quite dislike the half-link chain.
-
• #643
They can be quite useful. To buy a full chain is standard price (for a chain), but to buy a single half link can be somewhere around £5. Which is plain ridiculous so I'd rather buy a full half-link chain than a normal chain + £5 for a single half-link
-
• #644
They can be really noisy and clunky
this why i ditched mine, it was like cycling on a machine gun
-
• #645
Mine's really quiet. Also, I've never been able to run a chain so slack before without it coming off. I've had it bouncing off the chainstays it was that loose. But I do run a 13t sprocket so there isn't too far to travel before it hits
-
• #646
even when mine was quiet i could still feel the vibration from every link on the chainring in my feet.

you right, from that pic it doesn't, id say its a beater,
for me its not a case of the money, my beater is reasonable expensive and i look after it. all i find is in this thread there are some bikes that look brand new with loads of stickers on them, to me thats not a beater. Mines more if it looks like its seen years of use, but still works its a beater

the debate continues... I still maintain just cos the owner calls it a beater does not make it so, a beater should be something you can leave locked up without being terrified of it not being there when you come back...
on another note, oz. have you got any spare half links left over? really don't want to pay a 5er for one, and really don't want a full chains worth...
