I find it pretty sketchy with like 2mm of toe overlap because i never expect it, never had a problem with the 2 inches of overlap on my low pro, funny that.

the fact they're oversized steel track drops and not alu makes me think they're probably pretty low quality and thick and that's just a bit of surface rust

Steel track drops are stiffer than alu track drop.
Secondly, steel bend, they don't crack like alu.

It usually gives signs before failing other than surface rust though, gets really flaky and uneven.

If it starts Creaking its time to consider replacement but haven't had to cross that bridge.

I prefer to trust old steel bar than old alu bar, however uncomfortable they may be.

Rusting can weaken the thin metal, my mate snapped a pair that I sold him and they were nearly new. -
