  • SE1 close enough - thanks for the offer. Will PM

  • @ retro ..... is the issue with the chrome just regarding it's hardness or is there some other reason you don't want to cut a thread onto chrome ? would it blunt the cutting tool ?

  • Bikefix in Lambs Conduit St did mine....they were chromed too! Not as tidy as I'd hoped, but did the job....

  • @ dicki, yes, the issue is the hardness of the chrome, even if the die will go through the chrome which would be difficult, I certainly wouldn't want to do it with my one as it would definitely take the edge of it.

  • so how would one go about threading a chromed pair of forks, i only ask as i have a pair here i want another few cm's of thread on ? would i just pack out the gap with spacers or can i remove said chrome somehow ?

  • Take them here:
    London Chroming Co. Ltd
    735 Old Kent Road
    London SE15 1JL
and they can chemically remove the chrome on the section of steerer that you want threaded (+ a bit extra for luck).

  • ... i only ask as i have a pair here i want another few cm's of thread on ? would i just pack out the gap with spacers...?

How many cm is a few?

I'd say 2cm is the limit aesthetically speaking... and even then it might look a bit gash.

    But it is cheaper.

  • okay i have some forks which i have for my current bike i would love for them to fit but they are rather large for a bike around 57-58+ cm my bikes smaller so in a nutshell i really need to get them threaded down and the excess cut so they fit. any ideas on bike shops that can carry out this process in london preferably south as i am situated in south east london, i dont want to spend alot so i can cut it down myself with a hack saw if need be to save extra money it is the threading that needs to be done thank you some help would be much appreciated.

  • it says on brick lane bikes that they charge £25 for chase/cut threads on fork.... if this helps?

  • oh really okay thanks yeah it helps ima check them out i think

  • suggest hitting yell.com, look for smaller/older bike shops as these tend to have tools and knowledge for older bikes.
Just to throw a bit more thread down a fork steerer and cut the end off doesn't sound like £25 to me though. Or is that typical for London tax?

  • I have recently picked up a set of forks and the head tube needs threading by about another couple of CM. Where could I pick up a DIE for a 1" tube with a 24 TPI thread, or does any one know of someone who could do it for me. Ta.

  • Read above.

  • FYI. the amusingly named A Fudge and Sons in Chiswick say they can do it, but have to get the tool in from somewhere else. no price yet.

  • we have used the park tool thread chaser before to cut threads deeper, its the tool used to clear the threads after paint and getting threads healthy again. It does have a cutting ability, done it many of time before now, the teeth in the dye have a cutting aid at the bottom, just use lots of cutting fluid and clean shards away. A good LBS should do this, no reason why they shouldn't, its designed to and all park stuff have lifetime warranty ! Just ask em to cut the threads more with the

  • so i've read through the thread.
i want to swap the forks out on a bike currently with 1 inch threadless forks. i would like some nice 1 inch lugged chrome forks and swap the ahead stem to a quill stem (i know some people on here will hate the idea but it's an aesthetics thing).
    my plan is:
    1) buy forks from tokyo fixed
    2) take to brick lane and pay the 25 notes for them to thread.
potentially i may need to take the forks to get them de-chromed (though there seems to be some disagreement on this)
the forks will need to be cut down (as the bike is a 49cm and has a tiny head tube)
what measurements do i need to take before i get the hacksaw out and how accurate does the measurement need to be?
do i just measure the head tube and then add the stack height of the new headset and then get cutting?
how much threading will i need or will the good folk at BLB know what to do from there?

  • mesure twice cut once

  • headtube, headset stack height,
