  • Is it not about the comedian aswell tho.

Some people are just funny. Eddie Izzard for example.

^^ This is true as well, Tommy Cooper didn't have any great meaning to his material, but there was depth in his performance. It was a spectacle (although he had a load of awful jokes too). My point is that there's next to no comedians who have depth in there material, either in concept or performance.

    It's degenerate.

  • Can I just say that I don't find Eddie Izzard particularly funny. Everyone seems to rave about him.

  • I have a bunch of old Sean Lock recordings from when he seemed to be a bit more out there and some is just plain mental (and fantastic), his newer stuff seems to be a bit more 'traditional' from what I've seen of it (not much to be honest).

I wish so much that 15 storeys high could return one day, that was one of the best comedies the BBC have ever put out...

  • Come an wipe ya ands on mecoooat

  • Best bit of series:

YouTube- 15 Storeys High - Pool Kids

I went to the fair once
They said "d'ya wanna go on scary ride?"
I said "I don't need ta, I came on the bus with my mother."
    Bollocks

I just laughed so hard remembering that bit.
    +ve repped

  • Izzard is top draw

Lee mack, like Carr doesn't have the story telling knack that takes you on a journey and makes ou laugh so hard you sweat! its just wave after wave of puns and responding chuckles. no real hearty laughs as the only emotion they tap into is edgy taboo or the smart linguistic element of a pun.

  • Agree. I'd actually add that Mack can tell a story aswell tho, I've seen him live in Balham. Fits of laughter.

  • come and wipe yer 'ands....ha ha, brilliant. And the fish sexing bit....

  • I disagree. I think that Davies took the opportunities that stand up provided him and developed into something else. Nothing wrong with that. He may well still care deeply about the art of stand up but if he's found something else that he enjoys better then why go backwards. Personal evolution is a reasonable form of progression, I can't see a reason to criticise that.

much as i loathe Davies and his boyish schtick, i agree with your point... but bearing in mind the route he has decided to take it surely only compounds his irrelevance in a discussion about stand up nowadays.

  • Didn't Alan Davies bite a tramps ear once, or did I imagine that? I don't like him, his mouth puts me off. My favourite is Daniel Kitson, great live and podcasts are worth a listen.

  • Richard Herring tonight at the Leicester Square theatre, really looking forward to it, only seen him do very short part sets so far. Will be interesting to see a whole show.

  • Got through my heat into Quarter Finals of Laughing Horse New Act 2010 last night.

  • Nice one!
How long have you been doing the standup?

  • 2 years. I did this same competition exactly 2 years ago when I had just started, and died royally on my arse, so it's nice to go back and have a good one!

  • sweet one! look forward to hearing warehouse dave from houghton regis in his gory entirety sometime......

  • Can I just say that I don't find Eddie Izzard particularly funny. Everyone seems to rave about him.

no way will! i must admit i am not the biggest fan, but he's done some hilarious stuff...

  • Take my mother in law ...

  • I'm an Eddy Izard fan, and billy connolly. I also like Reginald D Hunter and Franky Boyle, but they are probably considered shit in some way but I like them. Can't remeber his name but saw a guy from Glasgow on TV recently who was very good, found his name Kevin Bridges, I thought he was very good too.

    +1 to Reginald D Hunter.

My all time favourites were/are Stuart Lee, Jeff Green, Dylan Moran, Noel Fielding and Frank Skinner.

I don't see enough comedy live...

My least favourite stand up was Jimmy Carr. So tedious.

edit: not seen that Kevin Bridges clip before Tommy, but the one he did at Live at Apollo was fucking funny.

  • Russell Howard is very good ......

i would happily throw acid over that guy.

  • i would happily throw acid over that guy.

Harsh. A tomato no good? Maybe a poo?

  • Harsh. A tomato no good? Maybe a poo?

    ok a poo....

    but a jalapeño-y one.

  • I like Russell Howard. I like Frankie Boyle. Billy Connelly. Bill Hicks. Jim Jeffries. That little crazy sweaty guy that does live at the apollo and was in Something about Mary. Umbilical Brothers. Dave Chapelle.

The famous comedians that I don't find funny are people like that guy with the stupid tv show with the bloke called Kramer. Murphy Brown. Actually I'd save time here if I just said every American sitcom ever. Lots of no names acts I've seen at pub comedy nights. Me.

I love going to the Comedy Store but don't go enough and don't like how you can't sort tickets to stuff easier. I hate that it's a mission to see good comedians. That bald bloke who likes music and now does some bird watching shit.. out of Black Books (which I like) charges like £50 a gig. I'm not going to see Billy for the same reason. :(

Comedy Central has some great standup on it. Late night, old stuff. Can be awesome. I happen to love Dave Gorman's Google Wack story.

Very analytical about comedy ain't ya?

  • if you like Russell Howard you can find a billion more exactly like him in every student union bar nationwide.

I guess I'm being harsh....its kinda difficult to hate someone who is devoid of any type of personality.
