Much better than a child seat.
Safer, more comfortable, better cycling. With some kind of "hammock", babies from a few month and older can be transported.
Besides that, it's very convenient for shopping, picnic, beach, etc.

I have both trailer and childseat.
The trailer is by far the most comfortable to cycle with. My kids love both, but the trailer seem to have a higher status. My 18 month old climbs into the trialer at any opertunity.

Another +1 for trailers here.

When the child is approx. 3 or 3+ you can even go offroad

For me the problem is getting my little one to keep a helmet on her head. Any advice on that one?

I gave my little boy something to eat. Keeps his mind away from trying to tear his helmet off.

We got a co-pilot limo a couple of weeks ago for our 7 month old. He loves it. It is a really good seat I think and fits onto a standard Blackburn ex1 pannier rack. It reclines, has good side protection and just leaves a convenient pannier rack on the bike when you remove the seat. Am well pleased with it. Look and the Hamas ones and didn't like them.

i was taken around in one of these as a kid. way more fun to sit up front and feel the wind than to be relegated to the back with dad's rucksack right in the face.
I am using a Hamax Siesta atm but I would love to get my boy in front of me on the top bar, but he is growing fast and he could possibly be hitting the weight limit on it within the next 12 months. How is that seat on the road however? is there much buffering? of course I suspect compared to the Hamax there is not the same level of suspension.

Can anyone suggest a suitable gearing for a monogeared Dad Taxi?

I'm riding 38/18 at the moment, but lower would be fine too. Are you fixed or single speed? You can go quite quick downhill with a large load so be prepared to spin if you're fixed.

Try it singlespeed at first.

I've got a back brake you can borrow if needs be.

Cheers Andy.
I think I have one. I'll holler if that's not the case. -

I'm running 32/14 on mine, but thats a 29er.
I also just discovered that a stem mounted child seat makes the stearing more stable, which is nice on a porteur de bébé. -
