  • Ive just started getting into triathlons, hopefully do an Olympic this year. Ive also just moved to Old St, and im wondering if there are any triathlon clubs anyone recommends around that area?

  • theres london fields tri club which is close by. i am not a member, just bumped into a few people at LMNH

  • yeah LFTC is very good, it's quite expensive though 6-8 pounds per session.

  • Session of what? Once you've paid your dues, most clubs only charge for sessions which cost them e.g. swimming, turbo sessions where they need to hire a room, or if they get in an instructor for summat specialised. Run and cycle sessions would be expected to be free.

  • Well I think it covers rental + club revenue + coach pocket money.
Swim sessions are 6 pounds, running is 2 pounds (hence 8 for a combo session), spin is 4. London league transport is covered by the club so that's always nice.

  • Does anyone know any triathlons going on in the next few months (sprint or olympic) within driving distance of East London? I'm hoping to get one under my belt before the end of April.

Hi - depending on what you consider "driving distance" there is Ringwood tri in early April (http://www.resultstriathlon.co.uk/events/ringwood-triathlon/). I did this two years ago as I needed to fit in an early Olympic distance as part of IM training. Pool swim, but then anything you find that early in the year is going to be. I drove to Ringwood the day of the event, and it is do-able for the registration and start - it just means an early alarm call, but plenty of driving time to get some food into you.

I'm doing a similar search right now as I again need to find an Olympic for late April, and a half Ironman for late May. Either hit google and spend some time filtering, or go and buy a triathlon magazine (take your pick) as they tend to have full listings for 2013 in the back around this time of year.

Is the timescale pressure because you need it as a stepping stone to another event? Otherwise, I'd wait until May bank holiday weekend and do the Big East or Tonbridge Lions tris?

  • I know it's cheating as it's spread over two days, but having never done an Olympic distance, I think I'll sign up for this:

Early in the season, close to London and 'cheap'.
Then I might do a real one come June.

  • Awesome, let us know how you get on.

  • Odd to have it over 2 days for Oly distance, what's the point in that? Not a bad training weekend for proper stuff tho. Guess that's what it's being marketed as, an early season sharpener.

  • Thats what I figured too... intro to demonstrate to novices that they can in fact complete the distances without the pressure of actual race day. Plus they get the opportunity to have a go in the washing machine before the "big day" which in the case of a race like London could be many people's first attempt.

  • Duathlon time.

    Ahahahahhahaha...

  • What's with all that forrun?

  • It's in forrinlandskia.

  • Northern chilly McForrinlandskia to be precise.

  • Won't somebody think of the knees!?!

  • Guess who else I'm making do it too...

  • Just entered my first Triathlon to follow up my first Duathlon... Time to learn how to swim I guess.

  • Against the Velominati rules, but great for general fitness.

  • Got a place in the mobydickulously over priced Pru Health London Tri in Sep. Will be my first Olympic distance. Am cautiously looking forward to it. My swimming has gone to absolute shit since Christmas. Oh alright! November. Happy now? Must get back on it this week.

Have at least kept the running and cycling ticking over though winter though. Small mercies.

  • London tri is extortionate, although I did get a very nice towel last year. One of the most cramped bike/run routes I've ever done. Will definitely try and get down to watch the mobydickulous Hyde Park race!

Really fancied this Dorney Lake Duathlon (5km/40km/10km - http://www.f3events.co.uk/general/maxifuel-winter-duathlon-series-dorney-lake-windsor-race-3) this weekend but £50 for unaffiliated seems crazy.

  • Aye London seems overrated to me (although never done it) but loads of people I know seem to have loved it. Good Luck!

  • I'm doing Ironman UK this summer to raise money for St. Georges stroke rehab ward. Richmond Park is my training ground!

For the price, absolutely. And for the crappy bike leg. Still, it is the world champs, so some good viewing.

  • Windrush Tri are running an Aquathlon in June at Brockwell Lido. It was a great event last year in amazing sun shine. It sells out fairly quickly and has just opened so get in fast.

The details and sign up found below.
