I have a question:
who on here banks with Co-Op or smile?I do. I know that they have more clout than "us". Perhaps it would be worth petitioning them to not invest in companies that use trucks in cities during certain hours? We, as residents of the city, have a right to traverse it, by foot or bicycle, safely. Currently, this right is being denied.

All inquests, unless they impact directly on national security are open to any member of the public including the press although you can only observe.
noted. thanks for that.
but are the findings published ?
if so do you know where we can access them ?

What I don't understand is how the highway code seems to be ignored with impunity by drivers. Yes it's a pain to follow it, yes most people don't but if you blatantly ignore it and someone dies or gets hurt surely it's grounds for a prosecution.
162
Before overtaking you should make sure
· the road is sufficiently clear ahead
· road users are not beginning to overtake you
·there is a suitable gap in front of the road user you plan to overtake
163
Overtake only when it is safe and legal to do so. You should
· **not get too close to the vehicle you intend to overtake **212
When passing motorcyclists and cyclists, give them plenty of room (see Rules 162-167). If they look over their shoulder it could mean that they intend to pull out, turn right or change direction. Give them time and space to do so.
· Overtaking (162-169)
213
Motorcyclists and cyclists may suddenly need to avoid uneven road surfaces and obstacles such as drain covers or oily, wet or icy patches on the road. Give them plenty of room and pay particular attention to any sudden change of direction they may have to make. -

What findings? I think that you are maybe slightly unaware of what an inquest entails. Reports aren't produced. The purpose is for the Coroner to establish the cause of death so all there is is a verdict.

• #157
^ very unaware.
can you explain ?
i thought it would be like a court case.
all written up an what not.
i wonder why they are not written up ?

Private Eye are reporting that the lorry driver responsible for Eilidh's death is also implicated in an accident that killed a 97 year old pedestrian in June.
-
• #160
Wait, what? he cause another fatalities??
-
• #161
Possibly. It hasn't been confirmed. It's only just been reported by Private Eye and we have to wait how the story develops. More information will undoubtedly come out in due course.
-
• #162
And here's Platini's recommendation, which made me buy Private Eye yesterday:
Private Eye has a good piece about Eilidh Cairns and the travesty of the Met's investigation. Not available online though. £1.50 at newsagents.

yep, same driver killed twice (at least) different lorry, different company, still can't see what's in front of him.

However, Jonathan Hough, representing the coroner, insisted that the incident was of a type that is “tragically common,” and that no element of it would lead the coroner to consider that it “illustrated a systemic problem or that it might call for some specific response.”
I just don't see how the second part of that sentence follows from the first.

It was Nora Gutmann: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Nora-Gutmann-Badass/248360391840908
Eilidh's Coroner is a disgrace. This could have been prevented.

It seems the officer who investigated Eilidh's death may have had other matters on his mind:

i have heard about this mortgage fraud case.
was this the officer who investigated elidh's death ?

lets hope the high court judge hears about this drivers second killing.
the driver needs to go behind bars.
and yes the whole issue of road safety needs to radically altered.
it is a scandal and a national (also international) disgrace.

The unwritten thing I got out of this was that dead cyclists were a necessary evil of allowing hgv's through Central London

I wouldn't even say "necessary evil", more like "acceptable loss".
The policy makers couldn't give a fuck about cyclists, dead or alive. We are a minority who generally don't contribute as much tax as most car drivers or lorry users, so we just aren't as important to them. The pro-cycling lobbyists, with all due respect to the good work of LCC and the like, are dwarfed by the vested interests of the internal combustion engine, from oil producers to car retailers. Cycling is seen as transport for poor people or a weekend hobby for MAMILs.
Very dark. If those people represent the majority of motorists in London, it is very scary indeed. With attitudes like that prevailing among motorists, London is a very scary place to cycle.
