I always thought this was 90s, based on the components

Somebody got fed up with lifting 50s steel components and updated it 🙂
They would typically originally have had only 3 speeds, so modernisation is to be expected

There's information on Claud Butler frame numbers online, let us know what you find out. Would probably have had bosses for Benelux levers originally, the 'modern' ones will be a later addition.

Does anyone on here have one of those thorn tandems which are easy for a young adult/teen to sit on?
And could I have a go?

I do and yes you can. Not sure I'll be down your way anytime soon, but I do have 3 kids you can borrow to get a feel for someone putting in literally zero effort on the back

Let me do some thinking on getting up to yours to have a go with my lazy bones in tow.

Might be able to meet nearer yours if I can trick a kid into doing a south London parkrun - that'd be a Saturday. Or I could come without a kid, Daddy No Mates

Good wee ride yesterday, but this bike is just too long reach for me.

I think I'm going to fit some swept bars, any suggestions?

Does anyone have a family friendly tandem for sale? Keener on a hybrid/MTB style than I am something with drops.

on-one mike working very well for me on the front of our tandem, depends how much sweep you're looking for...

Thanks @ibob, I was thinking about Nitto Albatros, keep the bar end shifters and use MTB levers as I'm already running v brakes.

I'm looking at your likely wrist position on those and thinking rather you than me!

I have these on my surly and they’re great. Exactly the same, bar end shifter, brake lever only. V comfy and easy to change gear

Also, i have a stronglight triple on the tandem and have “dished” two outer chain rings somehow, such that the chain falls between the now expanded gap between big ring and the middle ring, not ideal. Any suggestions?

I agree about the Nitto Albatross. I bought a set about 8-9 years ago, and they are brilliant. Have used them on several bikes. Including on an old mtb to shorten the reach.
I find the hand position very close to riding on the tops of drops.

I reckon they'd be great - I haven't tried albatross, but I have a nitto moustache on a town bike & the end of the bar is a comfy spot

Also - anyone know a bike shop with excelebt tandem knowledge anywhere between or around Bristol and London? Most of them seem to be in the midlands/north from google

Added the swept bars the Dawes, perfectly comfortable and I think they look good.

Need a similar setup for the stoker now.

Looks great! We’ve found the reach can get a bit short for the stoker if they’re not able to get forwards onto the hoods, but ymmv… in theory they’re not supposed to be so leant over anyway, as they don’t have the headwind to push the torso upwards?
