  • Very nice! All looks in great condition too.

  • It’s something unbranded, but reach might actually be a bit short now.

I replaced the ugly adjustable stem with a nicer Marin one I found cheap on eBay, it gives the exact same reach but because the bars are swept, I think I could go for something shorter than 150mm.

  • That looms great, I'm definitely going to do something similar!

  • Did any one collect this in the end?
    It's very nice

  • Hi @jeff80, I picked up the Claud Butler from Ed. It's very nice, but lots of work to do. I'm doing research on it now.

  • Looks a good frame though, most Claud Butler Tandems I've seen on ebay etc have much plainer lugs than that, so it should be worth it. I look forward to seeing it if you post it on here

  • Lovely frame! I raced a SWB Claud in the early 80s, straight through drive with a 62 ring. Just remember to always be on the front, the stoker will lose fillings....

  • Nice 1954 claud tandem on ebay at the moment . There's a bit of background history to it over on retrobike too.

  • Yeah the lugs are lovely. Based on the serial number its either 1938 or 1948. I'll be creating a build thread once I have got it stripped down.

  • Ouch! I will bear that in mind!

I'm riding my 1949 Paris Cycles tandem at Eroica Britannia in a couple of weeks, as captain.

  • Our first ride on the tandem today, we loved it! The Shimano friction shifter for the rear drum brake is broken, any recommendations what to replace it with?

  • Bargain, I'm still lurking for a thorn tandem

  • Not much of a view on the back!

  • Apparently almost none! Didn't realise how bad it was until the photo. Stoker bars will be raised next time

  • Don't fart!

I feel quite sorry for your stoker.

To be fair get a pillow and she can just dose off on your back. Perhaps ideal.

  • Yeah, picking it up on Friday, can't wait!

  • Another one, on the stoker's bars. If you need the drag brake you probably don't have a spare hand to use it!

And tighten your timing chain too ;)

  • Sturmey do one for about £15 that works ideal!

  • I have a pair of old style Shimano thumb friction shifters from a shitty scrapyard mtb, welcome to them for some stupid low price if you want to try them out as interim measure?

    Will photo tomorrow, PM me.

  • Got the Thorn on the road, rides beautifully but the brakes are woeful.

They are frog leg cantilever brakes, seems like no amount of adjustment can get the pads to contact well with the rim.

  • Wee man also loving the Weehoo trailer.

Plans so far, replace fork with disc brake variant from SJS, add hydraulic disc brake and burly wheel (26"x 2 tyre).

I'm also thinking some nicer guards might allow me to fit slight bigger mixed terrain tyres.

Future plan to have disc tabs added to the rear.

  • totally. epic pictures @mi7rennie

oh and I used to have those frog leg cantis on a bike. I thought it was me just being inept but could never get them to work well. I bought disc forks for that bike in the end.

  • Maybe move over to V-brakes in the first instance - much better and a lot cheaper.

  • 100% agreed. Skip the cantis and get some shimano V’s, problem solved.

    Ohh, and great pictures!
