What's the big fuss about Campag?

  • Its worth bearing in mind that the Japanese only became any good at making bikes and components relatively recently. A lot of Campagnolo's reputation stems from a time when only Europeans made decent machines and Campag made far better components than their rivals. Both better looking and more durable. Really it wasn't until the 80s that Japanese components began to approach or surpass European quality. And it wasn't Shimano who made them. It was Suntour with their Superbe Pro range. Shimano were still inferior for a good few years after that.

Campag dropped the ball a couple of times (Syncro shifers, Delta brakes) with regard to making things work well just as Shimano were raising their game with things like SIS shifing (mind you, they also launched Biopace at that time, so they didn't get everything right either) but stuff like C-Record is beautiful to look at (although the headset's a bit chunky, but what about the C-Record road cranks or the monoplanar brakes) and of outstanding quality.

  • Ob(l)igado pela informação

    De nada.

  • While I was out gettign pished you wre talking about my favourite subjet.

I like to attempt to devalue the awesome Campagnolo by disparaging it.

Campag i shit hot.. awesome to the power awesome x 10

  • "Shimano makes bike equipment that works beautifully. Campagnolo makes beautiful bike equipment that works."

"Shimano's boss did not start a cycling equipment company because his hands were frozen solid on a Giro mountain pass and he couldn't get his wheel off."

"Most bike shops sell Shimano. You have to actively make the decision to go the Campagnolo route. This choice marks you out as different and more serious about your sport."

"Shimano is the world leader in fishing tackle. Campagnolo only makes bicycle components."

"One is made by scientists in the lab, the other by craftsmen with oil under their nails."

  • Shimano works.
    Campag breaks.

  • ..." Campagnolo only makes bicycle components."...

  • I prefer campag visually, and i like that they have a good number of groupsets to choose from.

i prefer shimano's shifters and on the new stuff (7700 and 7900) i like the bold almost robotic lines.

sram has it in the weight category and they have some good ideas and clearly spent a lot of time developing it, but double tap doesn't do it for me and for that reason its my bottom choice

    I'm a campag person

  • It's ok. You're allowed to be wrong.

  • Campagnolo only makes bicycle components."
    "

    It's a Campagnolo.

  • "Shimano is the world leader in fishing tackle. Campagnolo only makes bicycle components."

I'm not sure that this is true.
Campag have made some alloy car wheels in the past AFAIK.

  • It's ok. You're allowed to have an opinion.

    fixed

  • broken

It's ok.. with £2k you can afford the Campag tool kit.

  • its ok i have access to a full workshop ;)

  • Luckily I run Shimano and don't need access to a full workshop.

  • Le poisson?

  • With Shimano's fishing tackle experience.. their bike components runs flawlessly.. even while submerged!

  • Luckily I run Shimano and don't need access to a full workshop.

have you ever considered that the problem isn't with the components, its what's using them?

  • Since I never have issues with Shimano... I'm perfect?

    Why, thank you, Mr Crane.

  • your taking the wrong things away from my retorts

i do enjoy these 3 thread wide arguments we have

  • Taken from here:

"...*But for all its history, success and image, Campagnolo comes in a distant second in the gear wars. The breakaway winner is Shimano Inc.--the Japanese company that first got into the bike business by adapting the technology used in its line of fishing reels to gears and brakes. While Campagnolo’s annual turnover is about $95 million, Shimano’s annual turnover is about $2 billion. A few other companies compete for the table scraps....

...The company does make less-expensive components, but Campagnolo products aren’t likely to be found on bikes that cost anything under $900. Company officials admit that for bikes costs less than $1,000, Campagnolo’s market share is maybe 30%....

..."By 1990, Campagnolo was on the brink of extinction," says Mr. Gamstetter....*"

  • I never take things the wrong way.

    It's fun innit?

  • campag wears in, shimano wears out ! nuff said.

  • its my bottom choice

So, what you're trying to say is that you choose Shimano / Suntour, but your bottom chooses Campag.

  • Campagnolo spoke production line...

    Shimano spoke production line...
