What's the big fuss about Campag?

  • Do you mean just the 2010 ones or 2009 as well?

  • 2009 as well. They are more curvaceous than their predeccesors and offer better ergonomics.

  • I'm pleased that Shimano is having such sales success.

Just makes me feel all the more smug and elitist...

  • i can't believe i've taken three pages to respond to this. having used only one of these manufacturers goods, i believe i'm in the perfect position to judge which is better. clearly it's shimano. i rode these on my raleigh mustang. why would raleigh but anything but the best on their bikes?

  • Non aero thumbs :(

My thumbs are specifically positioned to channel airflow over the widest part of my hips, reducing power requirements at 45kph by 4.2%.

  • come take the BMC for a spin -we're about the same size (except around the waist, of course)

That's nice of you. I'd love to give it a go. I won't be trading in my Shimano but if I like it, it certainly becomes an upgrade option.

  • I used to ride Campag until the release of the 11spd - i was like, what to do? Should i upgrade or not?

Then i had a look on Shimano prices, and truth is - ok i know it's a much small company but - Campagnolo is just way, waaay overpriced.

I think if you want a nice performance groupset and you're on a budget, keep an eye for Ultegra or Dura-Ace 7800 second-hand.

If you don't win, it's not the groupset's fault :)

  • Barginz need not be second hand.

That is bargainous indeed but i am majourly coveting the Ultegra 6700.

  • Just on aesthetic grounds, I'd take Rival over 6700, but it's also lighter and cheaper.

I agree that Rival is a real contender but i prefer the smoother change on the Shimano stuff along with just prefering silver over black components.

I'd go for Force of the Sram lot. If you want to go BB30, its possibly the best way to go value wise. Just could'nt live with all those bloody red squares on the red groupset.

I like the clicking noise myself. Have my heart set on a chorus groupset, partnered with some noisy hubs.

The crankset looks like it's made of plastic, IMO. Why is it that nobody sells groupsets with the hubs anymore ? Or the pedals ?

  • Because they all made shite pedals, and everyone else already had wheels.

Pedals are too personal a choice, and wheels have too many configurations (spoke + rim).

It looks less like plastic than this one:

and last time i checked, the crankset alone was more expensive than the whole Ultegra Groupset!!

  • chris king hubs?
    angry bee!!

Was hoping to. Cant find any info on Campag compatible freehubs though :(

Hope would be another option (Already have some MTN Hope hubs). They have eventually made their hubs Campag compatible, but now say that they are not 11 speed compatible (which I dont really understand).

Ho-hum. The luxury of poverty has granted me time to look around.

  • hubs have too many configurations these days, as opposed to standard 32F&R or 36F&R of old.

    This ;)

  • DT Swiss hubs are noisy as hell too.

  • They are not cheap mind.

    4.2 watts then :p

when the weather improves i'll run it over to wests... or I'm out this sunday with Ant / plurabelle

The 240s are priced around the same as the Tune 180s. Both of which are only slightly less expensive then getting some Royce hubs, tricky. I may just be cheap and go with some Novatech et al. The weight weenie in me wants these....http://www.carbonfreaks.nl/winkel/team-blue-p-683.html

Also just found out why campagnolo says the 11 speed groupset doesnt require you to change wheels, yet some manufactures say only the old 10 speed will work.

The H3 rear road hub, which is Campagnolo 11-speed compatible, is White Industries' newest version of the H2. Neither the H2, nor any previous generation of White Industries hub will work with Campy 11-speed because the 11-speed system requires the largest cog to cantilever over the hubshell. White Industries' older hubs were not originally engineered to accommodate this cantilevered design.

    If I can do 45kph at 100W I must be STUPIDLYFREAKINAERO(tm) and/or light.

Cool. I usually do the Harp Hilly but I don't like the ice risk and will probably have a hangover this Sunday anyway.

  • I'd go for Force of the Sram lot.

The 2010 Force does look like a huge bargain at only £50 extra over 6700. Not sure how they've upgraded it and cut the price, maybe they've decide that Force is going to be the big seller as OEM and are getting economies of scale. Lots of bling to sell on the bike shop floor if you're comparing Force against Ultegra.
