Not sure why you are all getting worked up about the "decent speed" of these things?!
imho under 10mph is slow, over 10mph is decent, and over 20mph is fast (for bikes that is)
So i thought 12.5 mph was a "decent speed", feel free to disagree.

as you may have seen a number of us already felt the liberty to question your idea of a decent speed

I was working in the science museum a few weeks back one morning before it opened to the public and there seemed to be some kind of small event going on for wheelchair users. Each wheelchair looked to be of a different design to the others and the one that really stood out appeared to be based on these things and was running around the place in permanent wheely mode. Awesome and just a bit frightening with the occupants head being the first point of contact if it flipped backwards.

This is the kiddie. Now tell me that's not awesome!

Thats a very clever bit of kit indeed!
Would rather have one of those than a segway... -

Humans Fail
Exactly what I thought when I read the OP.
Why do we constantly search for ways of being fat lazy fucks?
I won't be too happy if I get stuck behind one of these and there's some fat city prick on it. If they're a pensioner or disabled I may not shout abuse at them.

Are they easy to topple? I know they have stablizing hijinks built in but would a healthy shove send Mr Tubby city boy in a comedy cartoon-esque spiral?
What I don't understand is if they're only allowed in bike lanes they'll presumably have to dismount every 20 metres when the lane ends? Does this mean that the people 'riding' them will flaunt these rules until it becomes common to see them on the road and pavement generally getting in everyones way? -

Do you honestly think someone working in the city is going to leave their Bentley behind and cruise around in bike lanes on some gyro toy? I don't.

Segways are good fun. Not as fun as a bike though, ha!!

G.O.B. should be the only person allowed to use one of these
Best post ever!

Look like they have large potential for spectacular faceplant. Seeing that is up there on the want list.

Some motorists say this about cyclists.
just saying.

neu, if you listen closely to the video, it does mention that it's a prescription product and that there may be counter-indications. Basically, people are allowed to use one of these if there is a medical reason. A clear counter-indication would be if the person wanting one didn't have a mobility difficulty, or a mobility difficulty that would worsen significantly through the prolonged inactivity induced by the use of such a mobility aid. For people who do require them, wheelchairs are often a revelation and a liberation, and a very positive thing, very contrary to what people typically think when they think someone is 'wheelchair-bound'. This looks like a very well-designed machine indeed.

There is no legal category separation between using in-carriageway cycle facilities and the rest of the carriageway.
But yes, devices like Segways are a big problem. There is, essentially, very little need for them. There may be some suitable specialist applications, but this is not how they're being marketed. They are not mobility aids beneficial to the user's health in the sense that a pedal cycle is. Technical achievement notwithstanding, sometimes you can have too much space-age, futurist compulsion to 'innovate'.

Saw a Segway in Hyde Park using the cycle path a few months back when I was hanging out with Cheesecake Intl. Was highly amused.

A la WALL-E;
Basically, people are allowed to use one of these if there is a medical reason.
The other medical reasoning I can think of is a broken limbs, but then again, the sheer cost of the device outweight the need to have one for a mere 6-10 weeks of healing time.

pretty much my best sleb spot ever.. jackie chan cruising on a segway in paris.. i only managed to get a shot of his arse, but rest assured that this is the legend himself.. i shouted something at him to try and get him to turn round, and then felt bad for shouting 'cos he was just tootling about minding his own business, but then felt less bad because he was on a segway and so was hardly going incognito..

Police on Segway = no dignity
They patrol Dublin airport wearing cycle helmets. I don't get it, I thought cops want respect rather than laughter?

police on segway = fattie can catch kids.
I can understand the helmet though, as the video a few posts above us show that a cock-up can happen, i.e. kids throwing object at them to try and get them a nice facepalm.
Helmet may seemed a bit far-fetched for civilians (as well as cyclists) but not for police officer, at least that what I make of it.
Why have these guys been given guns but haven't even beentol how to put knee pads on properly?
