If running a business is hard enough already why pick an area where the skills, knowledge and creativity are lacking.
Part of the learning and mistake process should be that bikes may not be the right business and to put the effort required into something more suited with more scope for success. At least have a fighting chance...

No Balki stay, I wanna go to the roller derby with you and dogsballs.

I'm not really sure why so many people care about how solid Foffa's business model is. I also can't see how "their designs" are *that *shit either. Most people are pretty disparaging of Pashley's but you don't see a 38p thread. Plus they prove that by establishing the right brand for the right market and selling well, you maintain a successful(?guessing?) business.
Again I would like to say I like the hi-pro, and also could someone with photoshop skillz, change white to black or silver, and put some sweptback bars on it. Then I think we would see that it could actually be quite an attractive bike.

and add clearance for proper town bike tyres with mudguards, and slacken the angles to suit the riding position and intended use, and drop the gear to something you might actually be able to use on a slow bike, and a second brake because it needs a freewheel, and a rack to take your shopping, and a chainguard so you can ride it in your good trousers...

No, but we are part of the system of information dissemination which allows consumers to make better decisions. Something from Brick Lane Bikes might seem fairly priced to a cycling noob, because he has too little information. Obviously, this market segment can be profitable in the short term for somebody who has no interest in repeat business, but the interests of sellers who exploit poorly informed buyers are not those of this community, one of whose purposes is to enable consumers to obtain maximal value by sharing information about good products and good offers.
To suggest that Brick Lane Bike's pricing is 'fair' just because they are making some sales is also missing the point somewhat if you believe in free markets. The question should be, what would be the selling price for Brick Lane Bikes if all buyers had perfect market information?

[img]http://edswetdream.jpg[img]Hummm... not sure I agree with you on all of that. Look at the steamroller. I'm not sure it [Foffa Hi-Pro] needs to be that aggressive, but there's no need to make it into a dutch bike. The fact that people like riding track and road bikes with no racks and fairly skinny tyres but without drop bars shows the market. Add a style swist and I think it's there.
I'm not sure I'd ever buy one, but that's more to do with what I think the frame would cost, and that I am capable and willing to search and build something similar in purpose.

Yeah my argos only owes me a little more than a foffa, and I know which I would rather.
I'm not foffa target market though.

Problem solved. -

I know it's pretty shit, but you sort of get the idea.
Make the frame a solid colour, put normal looking components on, switch the wheels for boxish sections, put a normal stem, bars and grips on... maybe slacken the angels off a little and have clearance for at least 28c.

I kind of like these bikes, even if they look like they're made of scaffolding tubes.

I'm willing to bet good money that if this bike had been a concept sketch rather than a photo and had the words Foffa on the top-tube people here would be clawing their way over each other to slag it off.

And rightly so.
