F**kers, lost a couple to thieves myself. Sympathies. It does look sweet. Gone but never forgotten.

Has a Facebook group which is a step towards raising awareness about the epidemic of moto theft. Seems like it's equal to the similar thieving spree around bicycles a few years back. They'll take anything that's an easy pick or a desirable pick. Even a ratty bike needs to be chained to something solid, preferably with an un-croppable chain (case hardened 19-22mm almax, pewag and similar) and preferably with another lock/s. Even then I'd still be concerned the way this is going.

There's been an epidemic of motorcycle theft for years. The police do not investigate or aggressively prosecute it - sucks. I had a bike stolen, mid-afternoon central London, in front of witnesses that called the police and gave a description of the van and number plate and they didn't even send a car out until I got there and reported it separately.
Fingers crossed it shows up and / or your insurance pays out. It's a shit feeling losing a bike you like.
-

Insurance should pay out but at the moment buying another bike seems pointless, I feel like it'll just get nicked straight away. I need a garage!

By the by, as much as it's not a positive, you can go through an Almax in seconds with a battery powered angle grinder with the right disc. Don't rely on a chain to keep anything desirable secure, especially if it's parked in the same place every day.
-
• #8907
Really? Seconds you say.
There are a few that I know where people get followed and threatened with knives/guns to give them the bike.

How long did that guy in romford get for selling stolen bike parts on ebay?
-
• #8910
Anyone use a bike d lock on their motorbike? Guess it works better on solid wheel than spoked wheels, but seen plenty around with a disc lock on the front, just big enough d lock through rear wheel/swingarm/brake disc. Two big guys and a paddock stand can still overcome it, but certainly easier to carry around than a chain, also maybe harder to get at with an angle grinder than a chain?
Live in Glasgow and we are just waiting for it to start here, over in Edinburgh theft and bike jackings are a more than daily occurrence, kid died recently after being chased by plod so now they do even less.

Yup - under a minute with a good one at least. One of the downsides of the battery handtool revolution.

There's a limit to how much security you can have before someone committed enough will come along and burst your bubble.
Look at this shit. Frikking bang on Soho square, how much busier can you get really?
I try to park at a different place every time, but that does get old quickly, especially at home.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQg3wa0kGbc
@n3il Really sorry to hear that. Hopeful of any recovery?

I've since heard of three more locally that went in the same night, and one foiled theft, with a perp arrested. They were cutting through chains and disclocks with an axe.
We'll see what happens now. -

Pre chrimbo day in the dirt up at Gorman. Fucking freezing up there - full of Icy puddles after the rain last week and some fantastic very sticky dirt. After not having crashed for ages, I sucked dirt 9 times today, the last of which was a 3 bike pile up on ice coming down a super steep trail. I got the sandwich and my mate's bike clocked me in the head and hip.
Got going back to the staging areas to find my other mate with his hand in a splint after crashing my bloody CR into the only tree for fucking miles around.
Cue a very long drive to the docs and a lot of unloading by me.
Larks!

I assume that, as this is in the middle of the tread, it's pluggable and not terminal?
What's the best way to go about digging it out? It's fairly stuck in there.

Have you got roadside recovery?
Guy I used to work with had a few incidents with nails and the RAC came out and fixed it with this weird corkscrew device and plugged the hole.
Not sure how you go about doing it yourself but they are fixable (AFAIK) -
• #8917
...with an axe? As in a lumberjack type axe? So much for investing in tools of the trade...
Really do wish the best of luck and you get your bike back. -
• #8918
Yep. Some hero stepped in at the last attempted theft and one guy was caught so there is some hope. If i'd seen an axe I would have shat myself!
-

not sure how safe it is with motorcycles but cars you take to any used tyre shop and they will take out the offending object and plug the hole for £5-7 it takes under four minutes to do.
dont try doing it yourself unless you have a high pressure line to inflate the tyre again.
they make it look very simple when they plug them. -
• #8920
No roadside recovery unfortunately. Maybe i should do!
I might try @coppiThat suggestion and find a tyre place.
-
• #8921
My experience with this was that a safe plug (a mushroom-shaped one that's installed from inside the tyre) will cost almost as much in labour removing the wheel and refitting the tyre as just buying a new tyre with free fitting. And only one shop around here was even willing to do it. Phone around and see I guess

FWR nr Vauxhall can plug it today for £24. Seems a little expensive but cheaper than a new rear, especially as it only has 2,500 miles on it so far...
I'll give another couple a call this afternoon and see what i can get.
-
• #8923
Don't pull it out or all the air might come out with it.
Just ride it carefully to the tyre shop who will plug it. My fave is Burwins on Essex Rd or Motorcycle Service Centre on Harrow Rd.
-
• #8924
Burwins will do an internal for £30 - FWR for £24.
I'm guessing that as long as they both do an internal plug, i should just go with the cheapest one?
-
• #8925
I'd go with whichever one is more likely to become a go-to place.
fwiw i've done this at home with a kit you can buy on amazon, probably for less than 30 quid, and you put the kit under your seat in case you get a puncture while your in the wilderness.
Sorry to hear that. Hope you have some luck getting it back. Don't give up just yet.
Peace
