  • Scooter question: is there any good reason not to use Castrol A747 two-stroke oil? I've heard some people say it's just a decent, nice smelling oil, others saying it's for racing only, and shouldn't be mixed with even a drop of synthetic. Need to make up an order from SIP.

  • It's a racing oil but no reason not to use it. It's mostly synthetic anyway.
The only reason I can think of is the extravagant cost.
I used to run it in roadbikes.

  • Ok 3rd time lucky with my local welder, and it looks like we've got all the rust holes closed on the petrol tank, excellent.
Went for a quick blast after putting the bike back together, only for another problem to arise! I replaced the coolant expansion tank as the old one was cracked while the tank was off, after draining and refilling the coolant the engine now feels super hot and for the first time in my knowledge the fan kicked in. Just when I thought I was getting there.

Remembering the words of my Canadian friend Francois Lemabre, "fuck it, it's only a Vespa"

Buy it. The Vespa motor is designed to run with almost any old shit as the 2 stroke oil. In the early days it would have been regular 4 stroke motor oil, then EssoMix (2 stroke mix straight from the pump). Fully synth reduces the need to decoke the cylinder head quite so often, but on a Primmy/ET3 motor such as yours it's not essential.

Incidentally, check with Ben in case Project 14 re-used anything, but I have an entire ET3 ignition system surplus to requirements now that is for sale; flywheel, stator and Ducati CDI

  • Mod 1 retest this morning and what a beautiful morning!!

  • good luck!

  • Yeah all the best, keep cool and you'll be fine.

Cheers, ordered it anyway, had to make up a SIP order. Are electronic ignitions easy to fit?

  • You need to drill some holes, and mount the CDI in the left hand toolbox, and run the cables over to the motor. You'll need grommets for those holes.
Other than that it's just a case of swapping the stator and flywheel over and connecting the electrics. The Primmy wiring colours might be different.

  • passed! 1 rider fault on the slalom - put my foot down - I assumed that was an instant fail, so carried on thought 'fuck it' for remainder - but he marked it as a minor fault - good news! So might get a module 1 test booking Tuesday all being well

  • Congratulations!

  • cheers! Mod 2 test 8.30 Tuesday - yasss!!!

  • Oooh, congrats and all the best for Tuesday! Just remember everything you've learnt and relax, I'm sure you'll be fine. Exciting eh?

  • I'm dead excited! Cheers!

  • All the best for tomorrow, oh and as luck would have it a mate has a lovely low mileage ally tanked K75 for sale that would make a lovely cafe racer.

  • @ham: I wonder what the outcome of that was?

  • Other than not very good, I don't know. certainly looked fast enough to cause serious damage.

  • Not that the footage runs for long enough, but he didn't look like he was up and at 'em.

  • Dude checks his car over first. WTF

Must have been an earlier altercation.

  • Must have been an earlier altercation.

    This is a given.

  • passed! 4 rider faults - positioning at a stop junction turning left (too far right) - control (swung out slightly wide at the stop junction) - signals (timed) was told to turn right at a mini roundabout in an industrial estate - lorry and car in front of me indicating to turn right - I assumed queuing traffic in front at roundabout as the lorry in front of car was going nowhere - he was actually turning into a right hand junction, car was doing the same - I was therefore indicating way too early for roundabout - hung at the back waiting patiently not really knowing what to do then lorry made the turn into the junction, car followed, I cancelled my right indiction, moved up to roundabout then right - and postioning on a country road assessing a sharp left hand bend ahead, I moved too far over into right hand lane (even though instructor had said this was fine as you're getting a feel for making the bend)

    Great feeling though!

  • Congrats! Enjoy.
