Wut?
One day, after getting my motorcycle license, I hope to build something like this:
Perfect example of a British Cafe racer there Arawn, man I see so many of these fine machines everytime I go for my morning coffee - You really will love England if you like cafe racers like these, stripped back and zooming between cafe's, nearly everyone has a bike like this. Those ugly english bikes like plastic ducatis and suzukis, well they just don't belong here.
As soon as you get your licence you be sure to jump on a plane to join us all in a cafe race - riding from one cafe to another just as fast as we can, like I said we all do it! Sometimes we get to see really cool bands like the Quarrymen play as well
Ride safe big boy!

Markyboy: I've taken motorcycle lessons and almost had my license. We have two tests on the motorcycle itself and one theory test. Those can be pretty tough. I passed the first test but had to quit due to a car accident (I wasn't able to turn my head for a while) followed by the mexican flu. It got me out of the game for long enough to make the first test expire. Besides that, I've ridden on several types of motorcycles and I'm capable of handeling a machine like that. A plastic racing bike is fun to ride, but I still think it's ugly next to a cafe racer or a clean hardtail harley davidson.
VanUden: I call that ugly indeed.
Brighton Guzzi: I never said that that was a cafe racer. It's a harley-davidson. I said that, as someone from the continent, the cafe racers are one of the best known things about the culture in the UK. Other things I know about the UK are eathing french fries out of old newspapers and I've met tourists. But I don't think most of them are an example of the culture. At least I hope not XD.

BlueQuinn: Is that your bike? That's a beauty!

Hey BQ, how much does that weigh? I had a Hinckley Trident and was super heavy, and that kinda put me off Triumphs for a bit. Would love a Speed Four though!

It is a quite physical bike to ride. It's fairly heavy and it took me a very long time to get attuned to riding it. It's not a bike that inspires confidence on twisty B roads, and it's just fucking horrible on a motorway, but as a loud, pretty, look-at-me posing machine it's great. And it's really rather nice bowling along a dry sweeping A road. And people just love it. kids, old gents, other bikers, women, everyone seems to like it and want to talk to you when you stop.

We'll have to agree to disagree then Arawn. I could be wrong but I doubt you know anything about the Katana and why it's an iconic bike, never mind the differences between an original and modifications to the bike in the pic. Kind of ironic considering what you said you love about cafe racers...
Good luck in getting your licence, I've held one for the past 27 years.

Katana, gotcha

Katana, gotcha
Not been available for many years but if you look around you could still pick one up in fairly decent nick. Expect to pay anything from 1k for a dog to 8k for an original minter.
The engines go on forever, reg/rec will need replacing if it hasn't been already. Wheels and everything are totally different to the ones in the pic, which limits tyre choice.
Things like classic insurance can keep running costs low.

It's OK to have your own preferences on motorbike aesthetics, but coming on a motorbike appreciation thread calling other people's bikes ugly just shows a lack of social skills and respect I think...
You could have said that in a more friendly way, at least say "in my opinion", but you did not.
Your written english seems pretty good to me, so being "from the continent" can't be the reason of the crudeness of your words.
I have a plastic suzuki myself. And in no ways in the league of Vanuden's... On that bike I attended rides with cafe racer riders... I was actually surrended by triumphs, nortons, tritons, HD, Guzzis, BMWs, etc and was, in some occasions the only rider on a japanese bike. Well NOBODY came to see me and called my bike ugly. They were nice people, always happy to chat, not one snob around!
Bicycle and motorbike communities exist because of a shared enthousiam, the old "anyone on two wheels is a friend" thing.
It is precisely because you can say everything you want, that restraigning a bit your comments towards people you have not even met yet or shared a beer with, makes you a nicer member a priori, someone that I will want to interact with, invite to a motorbike ride to britanny once they are sorted with their license and their cafe racer / HD whatever it is.I'm glad that you are now feeling better after your accident (sorry to hear about that). Good luck with your license test, and ride safe.
And BTW I'm from the continent too.

Eightball - sorry read back and realised you're talking post test, an 1100 like the Kat would probably cripple you on insurance and to be honest it would be a total pig as a first bike. The Bandit 6 is a good starter bike as is the Fazer. If you're feeling brave look back a bit for an older machine, mid size engine, that you could pick up for a lot less, will still have more grunt than you realistically need, less attractive to thieves and lower insurance.
Also consider something like the CB500 check out clips on YouTube of them racing, they don't hang about, have legendary Honda reliability (were the despatcher's tool of choice for many years) don't drink too much and insurance will be reasonable.

I bought a mint 05 600 Bandit with less than 3000 miles on the clock last year for under £2000, there are bargains to be had.

^^ thanks - aye, would be first big bike so will stick around 600cc mark I reckon
^ have seen some locally for 2K ish mark that look decent - cheers
P.S will have to be kept outside on road, so less stealable looking the better!

All you bikes are ugly!

Shit, wrong sign-in

In that case splurge 25 notes on a bike cover off eBay, it instantly makes your bike less attractive to scrotes and covers it from the elements.
The other thing to invest in would be a Xena (or similar) alarm with movement sensor that screams loudly if tampered with.
