Lynx
Give Nigel at NBS a call and ask his opinion - I blew mine up some years back and he fixed it for a very decent price. There's nothing that technical about these engines and they are pretty robust, you might be surprised when you get inside the engine.
There has been talk of the oil filters spinning off but I thought that was due to a manufacturing issue with the filters. Yes, a jubilee clip can be used but I think the issue has passed now (unless you are using oldish oil filters)
Drop the pan, take a look see whats going on, or do you know what is lunched?
Lots of help and advice on both the MG Club site but also Wild Guzzi in the states.
Good luck!

No idea it was filters but have heard of this happening before. The bike has been looked at by someone in the midlands and they said new engine complete. That was a really high figure, hence selling it to me for cheap with stipulations after sitting in his garage for a few years.
Though a cheapish engine, stick it in and then give the other engine a strip and see. Whilst actually using the bike with another engine. Think I was a bit optomistic about that. :( But todays calls have been informative.
Time to finish the few bikes and get the cash flowing first.
When going to see bikes take someone who will overrule you when your heart say you want one and you head says yeah and the realist needs to be clear in telling the optomist to be sensible.

I need somewhere I can spray some panels and a petrol tank, just rattle-can, but don't have the space, no spare room, garage not my own, any ideas?

^ Ha!
Or does anyone know any good paint sprayers that do bikes in London? It would be dead simple, a petrol tank and 7 panels (5 of them quite small) in gloss white, no decals, just simple.

Rider OK, but fuck that's got to Hurt at 180mph.

Quick poll: sv650 or bandit 600?
-
• #2435
SV and some nice loud pipes
-

SV probably a bit more fun....
There are some way more funky choices around for similar cash if you're not restricted by prohibitive insurance costs?
-

SV - it's uglier, but it sounds great, being a V twin. And being a V twin it's narrower, lighter, more chuckable, has a nice fat torque curve and people say it's easy to ride.

They're dead easy to ride and can be tweaked to corner very well indeed. My sis had one and my only complaint was that the engine was a bit flat and lacked character.
....you can get a Ducati 900ss for similar money.
(or a Suzook SV/TL1000 / Honda VTR1000)

Cheers guys, it seems to fit the fun but utalitarian vibe i'm after, reliable and cheap to tweak.
I looked at an sv1000 but i've not seen one with low enough miles yet. -

Would the SV650 be tame enough for a new rider, who learned on a CBF500? And what would you need to pay for a decent one?
-
• #2441
And what are they like to insure? Sorry for the barrage.

Yes.
Very popular with new riders,No idea about cost.

I've seen one in oxfordshire, 2005, 3000 miles, £2.5.

By the by - SV1000 motors are tough. I had 26k on my TL when I flogged it and it was still as strong as the day I got it. (TL had lumpier cams and more compression, too)
If you care about it, both the 650 and 1000 are pretty rotten on fuel consumption.

Interesting. I still like CBF500s. Still faffing.

^ Man-up and get a GS1000 Wes Cooley rep!

Ah go on then. I'd love a special based on something like this. Modern running gear and a hogged out APE block GSXR motor for power.
Sweet.

Good old Pops. The Japanese are just magnificent when it comes to race bike building. Incredible passion.

Very pretty guzzi......
Looking for a new engine as the oil filter slipped (didn't have a jubilee clip?) so the engine is lunched, though a straight engine swap was possible but its quite pricey more than I thought. Got the bike cheap as I promised not to break it for spares and get it back on the road and let the old owner have a few goes.
But after a chat with a few people who have said take it apart and see what you need and then decide if a new engine is worthwhile. Which is a real breathe of fresh air.
