  • all I need is a horn, not even a speedo apparently!

I had to dig around for this on my last mot after my dash came off and I was using GPS.
Its one of those stupid things - you don't need it for the MOT but from my research according to the UK Road Vehicles Regulations of 1986 “every motor vehicle shall be fitted with a speedometer which, if the vehicle is first used on or after 1st April 1984, shall be capable of indicating speed in both miles per hour and kilometres per hour, either simultaneously or, by the operation of a switch, separately”
So technically plod can have you on that regardless of MOT.

  • I got my CBT Oct 2019, shoulda had my license March 2020.
    Got my license September 2020.

GN125: Oct '19, sold Mar '21 (stopped using in Sept '20)
DR350SE: Jun '20 (started using Sept '20 after passing test)
XJ600N: Mar '21 (already over 2.5k on the clock)
    Sherco 300 ST: (tbc)

So this is bike number 4 I'll have owned, but never intended to find space for 3 at home.

@Yukirin yes for sure. I guess it is more important on a bike that you might go faster than 30mph. Apparently flat out on a longer trials section some guys push them to 45mph, but by the sounds of it a speedo would only remind you how slow you are. I may look to fit a bicycle one to avoid plod stress.

  • I can’t imagine riding a trials bike on the road for any length of time without getting pulled by dibble.

  • If you do ever have the misfortune of being stopped by a copper who is actually aware of construction and use regs then they'll also be able to do you for not having a chainguard/front sprocket cover (if not fitted not an MOT fail), brake light operated by both brakes (photo doesn't seem to show a switch on the front?) and you also need a red rear reflector - thought that one was an MOT requirement too though.

Ninja edit - if you're going for no lights at all then ignore the brake light comment! Reflector still needed.

  • Indicators arrived, all I’m missing now is the actual bike. 🤪

Got myself some black screws for the windscreen as well as those silver ones are hideous.

  • @Jung well..... I am expecting it to be a really sketchy motorised version of the Giant Acid 4x bike, or the BMX - don't go fast and get off the road asap and enjoy the chill. There are pitbike seat options as above, I'll look at some mini sponge seat pad on the mudguard before going full seat bro.

@cagimaha it is all a bit strange with that stuff. If there's no lights, there's no lights. Last I checked reflector isn't needed if you don't have any lights at all. It's not much trouble to whack a little reflector on the number plate anyway.

Realistically I'm only on the road for a couple of miles to get out of town and into the countryside. Definitely a risk of cops, but I will do my best to set the bike up for all that jazz to avoid any big problems.

  • How do they flash? Just installed something similar on the angry bike. Low key but bright.

Looking for some similar low key mirrors but pretty stuck on choice.

  • I have some very low-key bar end HJR mirrors but beware, for all the branding guff (‘genuine HJR’) they are basically reboxed Chinese crap with a custom specific bike fitting and a 10x markup.

  • multistrada?

  • Too much wonga.

The answer is a 990 adventure. I took the sueprduke for a final run yesterday before handing it over to the new owner, and it confirmed there is no way I could own a dull engine bike. The lc8 is amazing.

  • Fair enough. They do seem to hold there value. Then again new they've always been expensive new, so maybe they don't.

Wasn't the KTM the alternative choice for the long long way around?

  • Wasn't the KTM the alternative choice for the long long way around?

Good point. It was their first choice, the GS was their second choice because KTM said no.

  • I read the book so long ago I can't remember the deets.

Did they not think their bike would make it?

  • Nope - if I recall they, quite reasonably, wouldn’t give them the bikes for free.

They could have done that trip on DR650s / KLR650s or even DRZ400s with near zero problems I reckon. Might not have made for such dramatic TV.

  • Boorman's hissy fit was brilliant, love it when he ripped the KTM poster off the wall in rage.

  • Banging choice really. Been out in the SV past week for first time in about 8 odd months and frankly, I love twins. They just have so much character.

Opening the throttle up in third to redline just makes you cackle like a madman.
I shoulda gone for your SMT back then.

  • Yeah you should!

  • Yeah yeah I bloody know now! Should have heeded the advise

  • Lumpy engines are amusing, singles too. I had a similarly entertaining ride over to my mate's place on the XR650R the other day on knobblies. Less fun was when the electrics shit themselves and left me to ride home in the dark with no lights.

  • Just imagine the alternate reality where they. All those City bike bays packed with DR650s with ALL THE PANNIERS and the riders rocking Police Polite vests.

  • Mini gif from a one minute balance...

  • Haha - would never happened. BMWs caught on because they were expensive.

    Good work PD!

    Now do a wheelie....

  • Shiiiiet son, you got it?? Nicely done!
