  • I'm after a cheap 125 to practise on for a couple of months before doing the second part of my DAS if anyone knows of something going.

Gerald, what have you done with that fine 125 of yours?

  • :-)

it certainly was a fine 125 if ever there was one. okay it was brakeless, the seat was falling off and it had no chainguard, but these were a part of its charm.
sold it. somebody bought it for their son to work on in college and restore. well that was what they said. another person wanted it for the engine to put in their quad bike.

  • Mixed reviews. To be honest for 300quid, I wouldn't expect anything else.

Even crappy race glassfibre stuff seems to cost a packet these days - and that NEVER fits right.

On the + side, I may have just got a nifty deal on a new rear Ohlins.

Thought about vynil covering the original fairings?

  • Nah, they are pretty much FUBAR. Cracked, broken tabs etc. Seat unit completely gone and indicators held on with gaffer tape!

  • I'm scared of this.

  • I had a Buell a bit mean like that, ridiculously tweaked engine, I was afraid of it, especially in the wet!

  • I'm scared of this.

I'd be interested to see how the suspension works on that.

  • looks fast as fuck, i'll give you that.

  • Painting bike panels today, was quite theraputic.

  • Took my nine year old out for his first proper ride on the back yesterday (thanks for the helmet loan, G). Beaming smile! Best pillion too, light and small, tucked in behind me and chatted the whole time even though I said I couldn't hear him.

  • I'd be interested to see how the suspension works on that.

Ohlins are a top brand, anyway I'm not a big fan of tubular frames, at least not for the super sporty(racing), plus that engine seems one of those full of vibration... even if it's a V engine.

This one instead looks only good.

  • twas my pleasure. sitting on the back of that rocket must have been a blast for him and doing it with an open faced must have been a batism and a half. well done.

  • I prefer the look of tubular framed bikes without fairings

  • it might well have been the pressure as there was only 15 lbs in the rear :-(

  • The R90s. What an awesome bike at the time. I had a well used one for a while in the mid 80's, I covered a lot of ground on that bike.
I flogged it for an R100RS, like yours! That was a real dog, and a big mistake, I wish I had kept the R90S. It was a gold one, and that photo brings back happy memories indeed!

  • Finally going to get off my arse and get riding. Here's the question though. I'm thiniking along the lines of CBR250RR/CBR400RR/ VFR400/ RVF400. My Dad on the other hand, a biker, reckons I should go for a Triumph Bonneville/ Thruxton. What would you fine chaps recommend for a fellow? I don't want something stupidly fast but I don't particularily like the feeling having sat on Bonnies with standard bars. I feel very prone to the elements, as if it's something I'd constantly feel like I'm about to be blown off of. On the other hand having sat up on a couple of sports bikes I feel much more comfortable lying into the bike, more akin to riding a track bicycle for example. What do you lot recommend?

  • and one with a modified/42L fuel tank it said

Supermoto style - straight bars, upright position. Better vision, no cricked neck - cooler bikes as well...

    "Blown off?" LOL.

    Too old for crotch-rockets

  • anybody know of a good source for clear arai quantum visor. seen some on the bay but wanted to see if there were other places.

also what helmets are most of you wearing and what ones have you tried?

i currently wear a few: shoei, schuberth, arai, vintage everoak, caberg and a AGV. my favourites are the caberg because it flips, the shoei because its white and has a pinlock and the arai because its comfortable, the visiblity is great and it has lots of click open vents.

markyboy the bell helmet you were wearing looked well smart.

Whatever bike you buy it will take anything from a week to 6 months to get used to the riding position, the way it corners and handles, etc.
I always think older sportsbikes look so dated, so if your budget is at the "very second hand" end then get something with classic looks.
I love my Thuxton. It's got quite a sportsbikey riding position, and it has bucketloads of torque, but it is a heavy machine, and definitely not a sportsbike.

I've got a Davida Jet (euro legal) open face and a Caberg Trip flip-front.
The Davida is very quiet - you don't need earplugs with it, but open-face helmets are not pleasant to wear out of town or at high speed, as well as offering a lot less protection. It's glassfibre with a lovely leather lining
The Caberg was cheap and is a 5 star SHARP rated helmet. It's noisy but light and comfortable, and you can take the lining out and wash it. It also has a built in slidey dark visor and an anti-fog main visor.

  • Got a Davida Jet too, find it a bit uncomfortable with the plugs I'v got in my ears just now though. It's a solid as fuck helmet and quiet like BlueQuinn says.
Also got a cheap full face from Hein Gericke, a Takai I think. It's alright, really only bought it coz it came with a black visor and I like looking like a bad ass, ha!
Also got an old motocross lid that I've taken the peak off of and painted matt black. Used to have a supermoto you see.
