  • Maybe this! I don't have a copy of the proper manual do have been using my built in wrist torque wrench on the axle (works a bit like a manitou 20mm bolt through where you load the bearings on the axle, then tighten the clamp with 4 bolts afterwards).
So today replaced the front wheel bearings, one was fine, the other was mullered, judging by the brown ooze I'm calling seal failure, or I've over pre loaded the bearings causing the seal to be doing no good, then dirt, then fail.
Interestingly put it all back together, and if you grab front wheel by 12 and 6 position can still get a very slight but defo there movement, at the edge of the tyre (19" rim) it's maybe 3mm. Wonder if the axle itself is the wrong one as there is tiny difference in inner bearing diameter vs od of the shaft (not wear, it's uniform along its length). It's going to be in the 0.1-0.3mm range

  • I can only speak for the R80 process as that's what I was doing but my ghetto method which sounds very similar to yours was not at all what the manual prescribed! The R80 front wheel bearings are a bit unusual though as they're tapered bearings, still never expected it to work the way it does. Basically guessing if you don't know how they're supposed to be set up.

I've found they tend to fail on the right side as the bike leans to the left on the side stand and that allows water to collect around the seal, but it all seems secondary to proper setup.

  • Tapered bearings would be a lot more susceptible to the wrong loading I guess, these are just run of the mill sealed ball 6203 series jobs, they won't take kindly to lateral loading so a bit odd that most modern motorbikes seem to use this style of bearing. Bicycles (which will experience less load) usually have loose ball which is going to be cup + cone, some sealed ball bearing, and fancier stuff like King and Royce use tapered bearings of some sort.

  • Bike starts fine - just a lack of gas. AC wiring from the stator gets fecking hot into the Rectifier though! Hmm, there is an unnecessary loop that I should remove. And, perhaps a bad connection somewhere. Needs a bit more work.

  • You're talking about electricals like I would about making toast....fucking mental.

  • Ride faster = more cooling airflow :)

  • :) Frankly I'm bored of it now, just want to ride the thing. Although admittedly, I semi-enjoy an evening in the garage with a beer, tab or two and some radio 6.

Anyways taking the CR250 up to a place called Troy Meadows this weekend with my mate. Lots of mountainous, rocky singletrack. It's all over 7000' so should be pleasantly cool too - everywhere I usually ride is FTFH at the moment.

  • Any motorcycle fixing gurus in the Catford area this evening?

Clutch cable has gone limp. Still connecting, pulling the arm but the feels like it's not engaged or connected to anything.

RAC roadside say 3 hour wait right now....

  • Clutch pack come loose internally, anyone worked on it recently?
Or the shaft has decided to stop being a shaft.
Some have a cog and a pinion gear at the bottom instead of a fork type arrangement, guess it's possible once the plates and friction material is worn beyond tolerance for that gear to come off the end of the of the rack/pinion arrangement

  • Pretty much nailed it.

Was worked on recently when the cover was replaced (part of the recent crash repair). Clutch shaft retainer spring was incorrectly reinstalled and came loose. Shaft disconnected from pinion at the bottom.

    Fixed and working fine now...

  • Every summer I dream of having a motorbike. Over 20 years now, every year something takes precidence. I've decided to get a cbr600f for next summer. Need to do my test. I can research buying guides for the bike. What's best in terms of buying a helmet, boots etc? What brands are recommended?
This would be a weekend toy initially. Do I buy full leathers/ race suit? Advice appreciated for a newb.

  • Go to a shop and try stuff on. Fit is what counts.

2 piece leathers is what I have. Can get some 2nd hand off eBay.

  • Helmet fit is personal.
All lids sold in the UK comply to minimum safety standards, but some are better than others.
Check out https://sharp.dft.gov.uk/ for the ratings above the minimum.

  • for Helmets, this site is good to get a feel for what is a good one as its the official ratings listing.

Other kit will depend on budget vs type of driving you will be using it for. I go for full textile suit but thats personal preference vs full leather onsie.

  • Soo......Troy Meadows was NOT what I expected. The trails running of the campground seemed so clean and loamy...in reality, a hundred yards up the track, it was a steep, rutted slog fest, replete with never-ending, enormous rocks and some big drop offs. Graham Jarvis, I am not - it was hard, physical labour. We managed about 35 miles, I fell off 5-6 times, my poor mate double that including punching a hole in his alternator cover that we patched with epoxy trailside. Utterly spectacular scenery - alpine meadows, river crossings and mountain peaks. Delightful but hard work.

My CR250 was way too hard, the suspension was bouncing off everything, rather than rolling over it. The motor was great though, lugging when it needed too but still with enough power to fire it over anything big. I ran out of gas 3/4 of the way around and had to push it to the road for about a mile and a half which was bloody knackering. Neither of us rejetted and the bikes were SUCKING juice at 7500'.

Really good fun but I still prefer things a little more fast and flowing!

  • Great site - thanks, good to see AGV's getting a good write up.

  • Rode out to gorges du version today and through the national park. Around 300mi. Amazing riding!

  • Always wanted to go to that neck of the woods - hope the heat's holding out.

  • Cheers guys. Set myself the goal of getting a bike for next spring/summer.

  • Great thread chaps - only started lurking/appreciating it recently as I now spend a great deal of time hooning around on my Triumph Tiger. Leaving for a trip to Greece via Switzerland on Sunday :)

  • Mont Cenis

  • Nice! I always wanted to make the trip through to Greece - are you going down through Italy and taking the ferry to Igoumenitsa or via the Balkans?

  • I'm heading from Nice, France to UK via Italian lakes ish. No set plans.

Oh you meant above me. Soz!

  • Close - taking the ferry from Ancona to Patras, then spending some time in the Peloponnese. May well make the return trip through the Balkans depending on time though! Going well so far - leisurely couple of days getting to Switzerland and now planning some fun rides here with no luggage on the back :)
