The myth is that any chains stretch at all. They get longer due to wear of the pins and the holes in the inner plates in which the pins rotate.
i have put two chains end to end (both the same make model etc. one old, one new and with counted links) and pushed the links together, it was well still over a link longer.

that's because new chains shrink

The first time they are washed..

^ chains do stretch in the sense that they get longer over time, but it is because of this
the actual plates do not lengthen, but wear of the pins increases the effective pitch.
i just wondered with halflink chains whether because of the kink, the plates would actually stretch.

Nah, it's the same as with a normal chain.

Fucking hell, I have lost my pin. I forgot it was delacately balanced and obviously man handled the chain so now it has fallen off somewhere and I don't think there is much chance of finding it.
Can you buy pins from a bike shop? Fear tells me I cannot.

No, but most shops will have spare chain links.
Just be sure the shop you go does a decent buisness in single speed / kmc chains. But if you are upgrading from The K510 go Izumi Super toughness. It is like 5x more though :)

They are what you should be using when rejoining Shimano chains anyway. -

You shouldn't be using pins to join a K510 at all. They come with a master link. Shimano pins are only for their narrow derailleur chains.

Found the barstard! Half way across the road!
Next problem, I have no idea how to sort out this freewheel rubish.
I have taken it off, now it sits in my hand. Haven't done this before but as this is a flip flop hubI was hoping to jst switch the cog over to the other side to start riding fixed. Do I need a whole new cog or can this one somehow be removed from the freehwheel?
I always thought the freewheel aspect was something to do with the hub, hence flip flop hub. Is all it is is a hub with thread both sides? I do notice that the thread is different howver.
Advice much appreciated

I noticed there was a master link yesterday but I had no idea how to use it so I just broke the chain... Presumably that is ok as well?

Wow, you really have no business working on your own bike, or even being allowed out of the house on your own. Spend a couple of days using the search on this site, and google, before coming back with more questions.

Youtuve has the answer, I see that I will need an additional cog, and I suppose it has slightly different thread as it sits on differently. I don't see why you have to be nasty about it though. I am just in a bit of a rush as I want this back on the road tomorrow.
Is it a bad idea to sock the whole freehweel in decreaser? I assume it is but its going to be tricky to get all the thickn gunk off it otherwise.

You need a sprocket, lockring and a lockring tool
-
• #41
Just wait, in a few minutes Eiger will start to tell you that the above are not required.

Yes. Very bad idea.

They might not be if he puts his whole freewheel in a degreaser :-)

I was thinking just the same thing. We're overdue a resurgence of his shit.

What is the problem here? Isnt this the place to post questions for the clueless? Would I be better suited to somewhere less cool like bikeradar?

Eiger, this is the place to post questions when you have read Sheldon Brown, checked the manufactures web-site and searched for similar/related issues and are still stuck.
E.g.
KMC : http://www.kmcchain.com/index.php?ln=en&fn=service#6
Sheldon : http://www.sheldonbrown.com/gloss_m.html#masterlinkYou'll find similar for removing freewheels and fitting sprockets etc.

Depends what day you pick, sometimes silly questions get good answers but most of the time they don't. It is definitely a 'don't suffer fools' type of forum though so always prepare for a hard time when asking basic questions!
You may find that you are better suited to Bikeradar but not because it is less cool.

Eiger, you've been sanctioned.

???
I would like to get hold of some half link chain and do some tests to figure out how much they extend for some given loadings. Sadly I don't have access to the test equipment right now.
