For the same money, get a Wippermann 1Z1 (out of stock at Wiggle, but ChainReaction have them at 8.99) I find them quieter than the KMC, and the galvanised finish is good for all weather road use.

Why the Shimano?
Looks like I might not actually need one now as I got the pin back in - I have no idea why everyone complians how hard this is. With a proper pedros tool is literally took 30 seconds...

The thing I am struggling with now is removing the rear cog - how do I get it off? Its a freewheel.
I have the chain whip ready but just realised that because it is a freewheel, I'll need a casette lock ring remover wont I?

Why not?

You need a freewheel remover! Something like this, depending on the exact model of freewheel

Why not?
The burden of proof lies with the one trying to take business away from KMC!

Don't worry about taking business away from KMC, they make the chains for Shimano anyway

you should do this ^
But if you havent got the tool and want the job done now then try a flat head screwdriver and hammer, i've done this a couple of times without damaging any equipment.
Your lbs should have the tool though. -

I included the price. They do the same job as the other chains and are cheaper.

Thanks Hippy - as long as they're good enough!
I think the tool I need is this: http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/product.asp?pf_id=9914&src=froogle

I just used the first link returned in google for the price.
I'm also recommending them since using them, not just because they're cheap. -

i just got a new kmc z510hx, anyone have any trouble getting pins in?
when getting them out, there was an almighty build of tension then a great pop as if i had stripped the threads of tool but no, then i tried putting the pin back thru, but didn't want to break my chain tool so just pushed pin out all the way and used master link.
i think as the z510hx has "mushroomed" pins is the cause of my worry.

No problem here with that, I think a good chain tool is the answer, it was easy just a couple of hours ago on mine.

hmmm. i cannot comment on whether my tool is quality or not as i have no idea where i got it from. it appears it must be somewhat lacking.

mdcc, seeing as you are knowledgeable, is the myth that halflink chains stretch faster because the links flatten out true in any way?
-

That chain tool I fail to see why people rate it. The Pedros is much easier and more comfortable to use.
-
• #21
The links do not flatten out.

It is rated because it is fucking strong.. not because it is comfortable or luxurious or it makes you tea in the morning.

The myth is that any chains stretch at all. They get longer due to wear of the pins and the holes in the inner plates in which the pins rotate.

And half the price of the Pedros tool
-

a quarter of the price, if you where to get it.
Currently use a KMC Z510HX, which is only 9 quid on Wiggle. What will I gain from getting a more expensive chain? And if it is worth it, swhat should I get?
Thanks
