Fuck me those winning flower bouquets in the olden days we massive.
And did'nt know they rode around with slinky's for chains back then.
This is a 'Simpson' chain. An early example of a totally useless product which was grossly over promoted.

My sort of picture.
The rider is Arthur Briggs, the father of one of the Hounslow's leading lady riders of the sixties and seventies, Pauline Chamberlain.
The date is 1925, and I'm pretty sure the time keeper is F.T. Bidlake, the so called 'Father of British time trialling'. I'm not certain of the event, but I think it may well be the Bath Road 100. Bidlake's presence and the crowd at the start suggest it was something reasonably important.
In spite of the poor condition of the photo, the rider's vibrant smile shines through - this was clearly a big day for him - I hope his ride was up to his expectations.

cross post from Friday Smiles:
My Dad 25 years ago on a tour of the Scottish Highlands. This summer we're hoping to retrace some of that tour together!*on a side note that bar bag is the only bit of kit in this photo still in use! It resides on my touring bike.

Whats she doing with that frame? Is she offering it to someone on their way past with a broken bottom bracket shell?

Looks like it's being used as a motivational instrument/noise maker judging by the big stick/tube she's holding as well.
