Sweet - thanks guys.

This just happened to the transition :0)
Cheers Andy, for the knard....I've just got to get a decent, wide rim now, so I can get the full benefit of low pressures, without getting squirmy. So far, with a tube, it feels good....exactly what I was after, to see wether or not I could justify a krampus.

" Rock Shox Reba SL Dual Air 29". 80mm travel, 32 mm stanchion. 1 1/8" steerer 175mm long. Well used, stanchion anti-friction coating wearing as shown in pic "
That isn't just 'wearing', that is fucked beyond belief. If that's the only damage then crack on as they are cheap and will get your bike running with some bounce, but I'd be wary as anyone whose forks are that knackered hasn't had them serviced in forever and who knows what the insides look like.
You must be able to find better examples, maybe try STW where most stuff sold is better cared for.

Fwiw I thought they looked fucked

OK, so after a conversation with @Dom last night I'm pretty sure this is my plan.
I'll get the Cannondale Trail SL 29 2
Which I will hopefully price match down to £849 .
With the cash saved, I'll pretty much ditch the drive train and go 1x10. Probably getting SLX cranks and the SLX Shadow Plus rear mech (unless I've misunderstood and the current one does have a clutch?)
And whatever narrow wide chainring is reasonably priced (superstar maybe), I'd also go tubeless.
I don't really like that its 27.2 but I think if I get the Kind Shock LEV dropper I reckon I can be sneaky and attach the cable run along the hose for the rear brake or the guides for the FD.
Does that all sound sensible, if so I'll proceed?

Unless I get this...

• #4560
Why SLX cranks? Just stick narrow wide ring on the stock ones?
-
• #4561
That Cannondale is niiiice

Because I hate the Octalink it comes with, I've already got the tools for hollowtech, I'd rather have a standard system across my bikes.
-
• #4563
The Deore crank is decent....I think it's m-615?
-
• #4564
See above, if it is hollowtech I'll keep it.
-
• #4565
Ah, didn't check specs, just looked at picture :)

I'd keep the cranks, get a single ring and a short cage Zee shadow plus mech.
Run the deore cranks & BB into the ground then upgrade to SLX.
Nothing wrong with Shimano octalink. It formed part of the original hollowtech.

I can get trade price on Shimano, my thinking is that If i whip them off right away I'll be able to recoup some money on eBay as they're still new. And as I said I don't have any octalink tools. Any reason to get ZEE? Also why shortcage? If im running 1x10 surely I'll want all the range I can get?

Short cage will handle the biggest sprockets just as well as a mid or long cage, the extra cage length is to take up the slack from the front changes, not to provide extra capacity at the back. Just make sure you get the wide ratio version of the short cage Zee, not the DH version.

You might get £40 for the cranks and BB. Maybe. I don't think they reuqire any special tools - doesn't a standard splined BB tool take the BB out and the rest is standard crank bolts and crank pullers.
Zee is usually cheaper than SLX and works the same, bit more bomb-proof. Shortgage because a shortcage mech has enough chain and sprocket capacity to handle 11-36.

a) get a zee over slx. look better with shortcage and more bombproof, clutch is easy to maintain as well when it starts to knacker
b) those ks posts only go to 100mm travel in a 27.2mm, which in my opinion is not enough for people as tall as us. the only other valid 27.2mm option is the thomson dropper (only 125mm travel too..) - this is the reason I am not buying another 27.2mm frame

• #4572
Ive been convinced about zee for sure. I was thinking that this would a good frame to start maybe go over to Chinese carbon (based on mark skulls review) in time. I don't think there's much else better I can get from cyclesolutions, but feel free to make a suggestion before I start making orders.

Has slate been suggested?
I am also part of the London slate fan club; no idea where/why I'd ride it.
-
• #4574
Do you read anything before you post? Or is it more of a steam of conciseness affair with you?
-
• #4575
no soz was riding :(
Yeah, should be fine, might need a service. And get some Fork Juice to help reduce friction. I spray my forks before most rides (try not to get the mist on your disc rotor!!)
